CarrieS
Help I did a quilt for a friend and as she was sewing the binding to the back of of the quilt she discovered about a 1/2 an inch of stitching that is coming out. Can anyone tell me how to fix this so that it doesn't keep unthreading. Apparently I didn't get it tacked down when a started. Thank You Carrie
JLM
I always pull the bobbin thread up to the top of the quilt and take a couple of small stitches to anchor everything before I start sewing. Hope this helps. Janet Mohler Colorado Springs
Bonnie
Janet's method is the most common, but you can also either bring up the bobbin thread tie a knot in both and bury the threads with a long needle...or you can sew in place a few stitches and go from there. IF you use the the sew in place method I would do a dab of FrayChek on the spot so it will seal the knot permanently. ALSO if you got the threads to far out to the edge of the quilt and your friend cut the threads when she went to square up the quilt, she will need to remember to unsew a bit and tie a knot in the ends...when those threads are cut they just unravel without much force...and in the wash they sometimes take out whole rows. I always try to keep the thread starts and stops at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch inside the quilt edge...they generally will wind up under the binding so you don't see them and it looks like you actually went all the way out and off the quilt, but you didn't. Jeanette
To fix what is already unraveling gently unravel it further until you can pull up the bottom thread and have enough to tie a knot with the top thread. Then bury it. Use your domestic machine to sew the line of thread where it unraveled. Pull up your bottom thread or take a couple of very short stitches back and forth and then continue out to the edge with the line of quilting. I've done this a couple of times when I cut the quilting motif while trimming for the binding. It will look the same as if you broke a thread on the LA and had to start again.
