Thread Weight....

As I was reading the "thread weight" on the Superior Thread topic, I was wondering....and maybe it was posted somewhere else and some other time, but what weight thread works best? Right now, I have a "Juke with the Super Quilter". I am hoping to get a Millie sometimes this spring. What thread weight should one use with the Juke? The threads do keep breaking and I just keep on a moving. Thoughts....

Sue,

If you are breaking threads with your Juke...my first thought it that you have the tension to tight.

Your Juke doesn't have the same motor that we have on our LA's and your RPM's is rated as 1500 SPI, the LA's are way higher than that.

My old 1500 Brother is an identical sister to your Juke, as far as mechanicals....my top tension was set between 3 and 5 depending on thread weights, and the bobbin was always set with a drop test....meaning that the bobbin would drop 2-3 inches and stop when held up.

You asked what type of threads or weights of threads should you use....THERE isn't any thread from the very cheapest to the most costly that I don't use. I used more for color than what thread I had in my hand. Each type will need to be dialed in....you must learn how to play with your tensions. Each day will be a new day...humidity plays a factor in tension even on smaller machines not just LA's. Don't be afraid to play with the tensions...If and when you get your Millie you will also need to play with the tensions...its just as important on a longarm to know how to do that.

Keep a paper record of what tensions you set each thread...you will get use to first doing it and secondly decide which threads you like better than others. Just because it says "Coats & Clark" or "Superior" doesn't mean its better or worst than the other its more what works for you. That is unless you are a thread snob...:P Even I'm a thread snob in some ways...:P:P

Good luck and play...that is the only way you will truly learn your machine.
