I have missed you.

Recommended Posts

You are all home again! I missed you all so terribly, and would have checked the site more often (just in case it was back up) had I been around a computer. I worked at the LQS on Sat., and Sunday did the Superbowl mystery. None of us finished it, but I didn\'t think that we would. Still, quite pretty.

Now, my best news for the week. DH said that I can in fact cut down to 3 days pers week at the hosp., so I\'ll have Wed and Thurs. for quilting, errands, and just having a life! So excited! Best of all, my hours at the hosp. went to my dear friend who gave up some her hours at another program in the hosp. for another friend. Just like quilters, we music therapists stick together and support one another! So, on the 14th of Feb. I\'ll be getting up at 6am, the usual working time, but staying home to work! Hurray

I admit I was having withdrawls from my quilty friends... but, I was hoping APQS was moving to the new server or whatever to get rid of that nasty porn stuff that seems to infiltrate our nice little safe place. So, if that\'s the case, then I am Ok with going through the withdrawls because it would be worth it. ;)

Teresa - ok venting. Remember me telling you about the class I taught on Superbowl Sunday...I\'m so glad you agree that it is odd that nobody put it together. Last night I got home from guild and found an email from the shop owner and one of the other gals complained that the new girl was in the class and took up my time. Mind you that at least 10 times I said to interupt me to the other two girls if they needed help. I had stopped every time they needed something. The main reason I spent so much time with the new girl was because the other two were busy sewing or cutting. I also did this class like I do all of my classes. I first lecture so they know the steps and processes involved. In this class I gave them two options for making hst and had large samples of each stage posted on a bulletin board so they would have an easy reference. ON top of that I had written directions! I leave the samples up for the whole class and then I work with individuals rotating as needed. I have been teaching for a long time and this method seems to be the favorite among my students. The girl that complained had pre-cut all her blocks which was fine. She should have had no reason not to finish. She first didn\'t layout her sets like I told her to and had to do some unsewing and I even offered to help! She told the shop owner she has no idea how to put her quilt together...there is a diagram that covers a full size 8.5 x 11 drawing showing the layout in gray colors and I told them if they wanted they could color it with their colors to make it easier so they didn\'t get turned around. I worked with the two girls that got their blocks together to lay it out but that gal never even got her hst together! Just venting.

Heidi....I\'m sorry you had this person in your class, but be assured we all have had her at least once or twice. When teaching a class I try to set the newbie\'s at the front of the class and the more advanced to the back of the room and then I walk and walk and walk and stop and talk to each and everyone as we go through the day....MY feet kill me when the day is done, but I have been able to stop the grippy ones from saying I didn\'t spent enough time with them. If I set up a sewing machine to show demo\'s with or to help speed someone up, I set that one up in the middle of the room so everyone can crowd around and not really leave their spaces....

You said that one of the owners were in your class, I\'m sure she has already put the fire out, but beware of the lady if she joins your class again....it won\'t matter if you spend your whole class at her side, she will still complain to someone. It\'s just how they work. :(

I really had withdrawl. I was out of the country for a week without a computer. Then when I get back and log in to get back with my chat friends and the site is down. Now that it is back up I feel sooo much better.

Those of you in cold areas quit reading now.

I was on a great cruise with AQS and SewManyPlaces. I have my queen size quilt top almost done and got to see Cozemel, Belieze, and the Bahamas too. The best part--someone else did the cooking!

Oh, Pamela - that is just toooo cool! I would love to go on a quilting cruise, but how do I check my Millie? And how do I tell my hubby I won\'t be diving with him?

And BTW, I\'m from cold country - eastern WA - and we are having a record snow year here.:P

Did APQS say anything on the chat ahead of time about the site being down for maintenance? I check regularly and don\'t remember anything like that....

Hi Barb--isn\'t it great to chat again?

I never saw a notice about the chat being down and probably it was done on purpose.

You have heard the saying about "it\'s easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask permission". If they had posted that the chat would be down, there would have been a avalanche of questions about why and for how long. So instead of ranting about it being down, we are celebrating that it is back!

Stay warm and dry--those of us on the left side of the mountains have had cold/ice/sleet/snow melting just enough to slick stuff up/rain/rain/rain since Christmas and I wouldn\'t live anywhere else!

I don\'t remember which day I checked into the website (maybe Friday night), but there was a very brief message that they were moving to another server, and to please be patient. So there was a little something, but definitely not enough warning to prepare us for this separation anxiety!

Julie....there wasn\'t a warning....those of us that were on line were suddenly bumped off and the little banner you saw was in its place....it went down about 3:00pm Friday afternoon...right in the middle of a sentence.

HOW dare they...I was talking.;);):P:P:P

Bonnie,

Oh the shop owner wasn\'t upset at all. Its ok to complain but at least open your mouth in the class so the teacher knows you\'re having problems! LOL she isn\'t my worst student. That award goes to a gal that took a 4 week course and even the students in the class asked her to leave! The shop owner called her the next morning after the most horrible outburst in class and asked her not to come back! I didn\'t have to say a word. I was going to hand her back her money and tell her to leave. Thankfully she is the one and only that ever fell into that category. This one just irked me because she wasn\'t even working at finishing her quilt. I did work with her one-on-one several times, as I did with all the students. Like you I never sit down...wore my crocs though so I was fine. I told hubby about it and he said, "so she took a 6 hour class for $35 and her problem is what? Did she expect that you would sit my her side hold her hand and wipe her nose?" gotta love him!

Heidi,

It sounds like this gal was a real pain, but I would be worried about her saying I wasn\'t helpful enough, etc. I would probably ask the shop owner to give me the person\'s telephone number; then call her and ask her if she got it together yet and if there is anything you can do to help. Perhaps offer her a one on one at $10 an hour or so, or refer her to piecing directions on the internet.

I would go out of my way to make sure she spoke highly of me to other quilters, so it wouldn\'t affect my future classes.

Of course, you can\'t help that she\'s an idiot.;)

Teresa,

Luckily for me my reputation is good and I don\'t think she\'ll trash me. She said to the shop owner that she did "like" the girl in the class that had never really put a quilt together. She was more upset that such a newbie got in the class. I have already scheduled another 2 hour session so that they can get any additional help they need. The new girl won\'t be able to make it so the other two will have me all to themselves! I still haven\'t heard back from the girl that complained but the shop owner told her I had already scheduled at follow-on (did that before I even knew there was a problem). I just find there are some that will complain no matter what. I have been teaching at this shop for several years and in the area for 5 years so I\'ve built a good reputation.

Rita made the star and put the center together in 2 hours 10 minutes so she confirmed that you can make this quilt start to finish in 4 hours, 6 hours should have been a piece of cake!

Yep, I cut and pieced the entire center of the Carpenters Star in 2 hours 10 min, and spent another 1 hr. 15 min. cutting, sewing and applying the borders, snipping threads and pressing seams.. It\'s beautiful.. Red & Blue on White, with 3 borders, two of a dark blue and a blue on blue print border between the two dark blue. Dropped my camera, so not sure if it\'s not working right or if the update I downloaded and installed today affected the communcations between the hd and the camera. LOL, really wanted to show it off.. :(:( :D
