meg_marsh Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I am getting ready to do a baby quilt with lots of SID - Lots of different fabrics and colors - can't pick just one color. I will be using a green So Fine on the back. Question - do you use invisible on baby quilts - would it be too harsh? I know the SID would show less. Or maybe, should I use a Lava variegated that would blend with the most colors? Lava is thinner than King Tut. Are there any other threads I should consider? Still being so new at this, it will take me awhile to figure all these things out. Also, if I use the invisible thread, anything I should be aware of - use a net, etc.? Thanks
Mary Beth Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 don't use a variegated for SID - you won't see it and to me it is just too expensive if it won't be seen. I think I would use Sew Fine in a nutral color.
meg_marsh Posted August 14, 2008 Author Report Posted August 14, 2008 how do you decide which is the best neutral color - In piecing, I use gray a lot. The fabric colors I am working with go from white all the way thru the rainbow and all prints.
BethDurand Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I like beige and grey for SID "neutrals." Hope that helps! Beth
Bonnie Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Meg, my rule of thumb for SID work on a quilt that is busy, is to find the least likely to be seen thread. If you have a lot of gray's in the mix then I would use that if there is more white than black, blue, red etc then I would use white. I think its what you personally think is the best. Some people want to see the threads regardless if its stippling, or design work or SID, so they use a darker thread than the background. I don't I want it to so I use a thread to blend in. Again I guess its whatever you like or what you think fits the quilt at the time.
barbm Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Try using Bottom Line for your SID - it takes some tension testing, but it blends into the seam nicely. If you've got a fair amount of white, I'd try that color. Or a pastel that coordinates. Doesn't really matter, 'cause from any distance at all, you won't see it.
meg_marsh Posted August 14, 2008 Author Report Posted August 14, 2008 Thanks - I take it that the invisible isn't the best option for baby quilts?? As for what color?? - will just have to lay several threads over the quilt and see - might have to change a couple/few times. Actually, I will be SID around these big crayons - the quilt is basically rows of big crayons & of course, each crayon is a different color!
peglu Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Hey Meg, I did a quilt that had losts of colors and lots of SID. I used So Fine 403 (Putty). It hid very nicely. It looks pretty tan on the spool, but is almost invisible when stitched. So much so, that I had to frog my feathered wreath because it didn't show enough.

I don't know that it wouldn't be okay...as long as its the Mono Poly or the good YLI thread.....I don't use invisible threads on baby quilts because they are used way to much. Even with the quality being good, I wouldn't want to take the chance of the threads popping and the baby getting scratched. But that is me. If you were to bury your threads and not just back tack off then it would maybe be better. I do have to admit, it wasn't the first choice that popped into my head....
Quilting Heidi Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Meg, I would use BottomLine or SoFine and I think you could find a neutral enough color. Test all colors not just the ones you think would work! I don't think I'd use monopoly for a baby quilt. I know there are lots of people who use it for all SID but I'm still on the fence about it. Just a personal thing. It does hide those oopses good though!
meg_marsh Posted August 14, 2008 Author Report Posted August 14, 2008 Thanks for all the input. I asked about the mono because I too was hesitant. Surprise, surprise - I have putty in my new stash. Not a lot of colors yet, but do have that one and will give it a try.
yeoldeforest Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I agree with Bonnie, Heidi and group - quilters tend to shy away from the Mono Poly or clear threads for baby quilts...may come from the past "fishing line" style thread that was used in the 50s/60s. Something about little toes and fingers getting tangled up in a loose wire style thread.
Katydids Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I second the So Fine Putty #403 . I go through that one the fastest. It blends so well with just about everything.
