I tend to only use my left hand to move the ruler and my right hand to move the machine. I can get really twisted up and try to have the ruler behind the foot. I hit the ruler with the needle once and it really scared me! I turned my machine off and didn't touch it for a couple of days! Luckily, the timing wasn't goofed up. Actually, it would take some major "thunking" to throw the machine out of time, but it does happen on occasion. I think the worst part is the sound and as you pointed out, how it "scares" you.
