budswife
I want to finish my great grandma's hand pieced and embroidered wool crazy quilt. What should I use for backing and binding and how should it be quilted so I don't spoil its integrity.
delld
Can you give us a photo. I think most crazy quilts were backed but not quilted.
ffq-lar
Look on line for examples similar to your wool quilt. As Dell advised, most crazy quilts were backed without batting and they were seldom bound. Usually a knife-edge finish or envelope turn was used. If you have a textile museum close, contact their conservator for advice. They can tell you how old it is and the best way to finish it.
mountainquilter
I inherited a beautiful crazy quilt from a Great Aunt. I sewed a very wide bias onto the edges and turned it to the back, hand sewed it down. Some of the blocks on the back were sewn with Great America Tobacco bags, very faded red white and blue. I would never put a backing on it and cover up part of the treasure of the quilt. Diana
