If you build your own wheels, make sure you use 2 sets of bearings per wheel (inside and outside) or wide roller bearings.  That will make the wheels more stable, and provide much better support for the machine.  Bliss is simply a linear bearing system.  You can buy the basic parts on line pretty easily, and then you'd only have to fit them to the carriage.

In my opinion, bliss is un-necessary for vertical wheel machines.  It helps with the horizontal wheel configuration because keeping the wheels adjusted is problematic.  I think APQS made one mistake after another in their design, until it was finally partially corrected with the Bliss linear bearing set up.  Keeping vertical wheels would have eliminated the problems they encountered with their horizontal wheel system.  No one else uses horizontal wheels do they?

Good luck with your project.  Jim

It seems to me that removing the wheels on my Ult 2 was pretty straight forward.  Just remove the bolts that hold them in place and slip the wheels off.  As I recall one side set of the machine wheels "floated" on inserts to allow some back and forth movement.  Just make sure that you ID them and remove the sleeves along with the wheels.

What kind of wheels are you replacing the originals with?  I have Edge Riders on my Zelda, and they have served me well.  Hope this helps.  Jim

BTW, I replaced Zelda's OEM wheels 12 years ago so the whole operation is is in the distant past, and I might not be entirely accurate on my recollection.

  3. Hi Jim,

I have an old Ultimate 1 with intellistitch.

id like to use rulers with it but I need a different foot.

Can you tell me exactly what I need to buy? And where I can find instructions for the install?

    thanks!

Sarah:  Nigel Wells is who you should ask about your Ult 1.  He had the same exact set up for years.  Probably knows more about them than almost anyone else.  He posts here often under his wife's account (Brenda Wells).  PM him, and I'm sure he'll help you out.  If there's anything more I can do, let me know.  Jim

Don't know whether this message got sent or not.  Just looked, and Nigel's ID here is: RunningThreads.  Jim
