Hi Everyone! Every once in a while, I finish something!
I was invited to participate in an art quilt challenge by Linda Steller. This years topic is World Heritage Sites. The quilts are 50 cm (19.7 inches) square, you can use any technique as long as it's a quilt and it finishes the correct size. The quilts will travel internationally, including Japan, Korea and the US. My topic was the City of Vallette, Malta.
I used silk fabrics, sparkle tulle overlay and all metallic threads. The buildings are entirely thread painted with blue metallic thread. All quilted on my Bernina 750QE. I had so much fun making this quilt!
This is the photo I based my quilt on:

    This is my interpretation:

No doubt about it....when you make a quilt....you have more fabric left over than when you started...it is some sort of mathematical algorithm or something!

mamaahma reacted to Oma in Quilting using CL
My three friends and I get together monthly (or more often) to make quilts.  We've been choosing a pattern and we all make the same one using personal choices for color and fabric (one chose Christmas fabrics).  We recently did a Judy Niemeyer pattern called "Tropical Sundance".  Since I own the LA we quilted on my machine.  I make them quilt their own with my supervision.  We use Michael's Circle Lord boards because frankly, they're the fasted, easiest way.  The girls love their quilts afterwards and feel such a sense of accomplishment that they made the "whole" quilt.
I'm going to try to post pics of all four of them if the size limit will let me.  The three batik ones used the CL board "Jester" and the Christmas fabric one used "Milky Way".  None of these have the binding finished yet, but you get the idea.  We usually try to do a pattern we've never done before so we "learn" something.  Two of the girls had never done any foundation piecing so this took everyone out of their comfort zone and we learned.
It was a lot of fun.

mamaahma reacted to Quilting Heidi in Just saying "Hi"
Hi Everybody!  Just wanted to say hi to everybody!  I haven't gotten much quilting done lately, in fact I've gotten zero quilting done but I do check in.  The babies are growing and doing so good.  They are both very happy and such good babies.  They are now smiling and oh boy do they light up the room.  Landon is doing really well and gaining weight.  They are both over 10 lbs!  I can't believe how much they have grown and that 2 1/2 months have flown by.  Landon's heart is doing very well and the dr's are pleased with his progress and also amazed.  Every time we see the pediatrician she says, "I can't believe this baby has hypo plastic left side."  We are so thankful for the miracle of prayer.  I truly believe that all of the prayers said for our little guy has made a difference!  Keep it up!!!!!  Not sure when surgery will be yet but we keep praying that he keeps doing as well as he is.  Oh and any of you wondering if twins are really double the work... YES!  In fact some days I feel like it is 3 or 4 times the work.  LOL or I'm just getting older.  The hardest part is they are on different schedules.  We're still having to force feed Landon so we have to wake him every 3 hours whether he wants to or not.  Scarlett eats every 4 - 5 hours and can drain a 4 oz bottle in about 4 mins!  LOL she has a very healthy appetite.  Of course I just can't resist sharing some beautiful smiles.  That's my update.  I hope you are all doing well.

mamaahma reacted to T Row Studio in 4 Point star quilt
Here is the last Custom quilt I did. It was a challenging quilt to do. The quilt is 100"x 100" and the large 4 point star was huge every thing was on angles  and on the diagonal. I  rolled the quilt forward and back a lot. I stared at this quilt for several month not knowing how to design the quilting. I finally divided up the areas and started filling them in. I used two different colors of thread. I am pleased with how it turned out. Thanks for looking.

mamaahma reacted to WW Quilter in Bluecut fire
You may have heard about the fast moving wildfire that has been burning in my area around Wrightwood, CA. . My husband and I saw it on Tuesday, just after it started, as we were coming home from a doctor appt.. We always hate to see a fire in these dry condition, but were not too concerned as it was about 15 miles from our home. However, it moved so fast and furiously that by Wednesday, we were given the notice to evacuate. Once we saw the flames coming over a nearby ridge, we did just that! We have been staying at my son's in Hesperia, out of the line of fire.
If you have ever had to evacuate (our 3rd time in 28 years), it is hard to decide what to take and to leave! I did convince my husband that in addition to our furbabies and vital documents that the head to my Lenni had to come too! So we packed her up and took her too!
Things look very much better in the fire area now. The flames were within 1000ft of the easternmost homes, but the firemen and change in wind direction were able to keep these homes safe. Sadly, the fire destroyed at least 96 homes (and still assessing) in the valley a few miles from us. We are still waiting for the evacuation order to be lifted, but are much relieved that it appears our homes are safe. Requesting prayers for our families who have lost so much! And much praise to those brave firefighters who stand between us and the fire!

mamaahma reacted to Quilting Heidi in Twins and news
Well today is a big day for me.  I have formally resigned from my job and will retire as of Sept. 30th.  I actually only have 12.87 days to work, 102.96 hrs but whose counting.  In about 2 min. I'll only have 95.96 minutes :-) the remaining time I will have to use my vacation time because we can no longer be paid out.  I will be keeping the twins full time when my daughter goes back to work.  On that note they are growing and doing well.  Landon is now up to 8.4 lbs!  We are doing out best to fatten him up.  They are so precious, lots of work but precious.  I've taken on the 8 pm and 11 pm feedings and I wouldn't trade it for anything!  They grow up so fast it will be over in a blink of an eye.  We took them last week for a photography session.  Anybody in the Albany area if you want the information on the photographer let me know, she is more than worth the money!  Fabulous session.  I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures.  This was what we woke to as our teaser this morning.  Can you stand it?  I can't!  I want a mural of it.  Just makes me smile!

One of my customers went totally outside her box and bought this Kaffe Fassett quilt kit called Beverly's Floral Bouquet.  I used So Fine and Bottom Line.  Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 with Dream Wool in the center applique part only.  She wanted feathers and crosshatching.  Hope you like it.

Terry inspired me to get my dyes out again and I have been producing Ice Dyed pieces like a mad woman!  I went to a retreat last week and showed the ladies ( and one of their sons) how to create this fabrics and they had a great time.  The shop owner asked me to dye some more and make infinity scarves to sell in her shop for the summer so I have 15 scarves made.  Oh this is so addictive!  Thanks again Terry for your advice.
Here is a pictures from the retreat, my latest batch drying on the line and one of my scarves.

Hi everyone...I'm trying not be as addicted to this forum as I once was but I really love this quilt that I recently quilted and wanted to share.  I have really stepped up and challenged myself to go more into custom work.  I have a blog post that is pic heavy with more details of my quilting, but here is a snapshot.   This is The Butterfly Quilt by Tula Pink.  The piecer did unbelievable fussy cutting and piecing and so it made it even more fun to quilt.

Last year I have Liz a couple of charm packs for her 95th birthday. Last week she came over and said it took her a year to figure out what to do. So for her 96th birthday I quilted her quilt today using Quilt Path on Frannie Ann, my Millie. The panto design is Fresco by Patricia Ritter of Urban Elementz!

I attended our guild retreat this week-end and showed the ladies how to Ice Dye this is what they created. We had so much fun
.I took my piece and quilted it. I extended the design elements of the ice dyed piece into the large borders. I used the new superior thread Omni Varigated thread called Harlequin. the runner started out 14" x 56" now with the shirt weight denim borders it is 48" x 77"  I will be able to use it as a summer throw or a table cloth for our large table and enjoy it.

Feathers and fronds in the stars; hairpin quilting in the sashing and for the border there is a swirl/feather/frond pattern.  I just need to remove some blue pen marks and then this one is off to its owner.

Thank you again...I have seen Kim Brunner method of straightening out the leaders...on occasion, I have pinned my 2 canvasses together, rolled and re rolled and even left them overnight...they never really were that bad...at least I thought...since my machine is from 2012 and for the first couple years wasn't used hard at all...
The only part I didn't see the need for was the pressing and restitching a new hem but I may have to go thru the process again and really check it...
Like Heidi I am only having this problem on really big quilts...but I want it to go away...
Mamaahma, so glad this post inspired you to fix the problem...your post helped me out to...I saved the instructions again and will do another diagnostic soon...

mamaahma reacted to Quilting Heidi in Annabelle's quilt finally done
This quilt is for my 3rd granddaughter.  Finally got it done, she is now 4 months old.  I always let her mom pick whatever theme she wants; I figure I get to make a quilt that I know will be used and my grandbabies get Nana snuggles every night :-).  Her mom was slow in deciding on theme for this one so that made me behind too.  She decided she wanted mermaids and she likes anything under the sea.   She found a picture of a bench (company is no longer in business) she liked so I went from there.  The mermaids and fish are pre-printed fabric that I just turned the edges.  The crab was an machine embroider design I had purchased for her big sister's quilt so I just turned that into an applique instead of using the machine.  I created a background with the sand and an ombre color way for the water as the base and added things from there.  The quilting went super quickly.  I was especially pleased with how the seaweed quilted.  It was all super simple quilting.  The sand is one of my favorites.  My daughter suggested the wavy lines on diagonal to simulate the way sand looks at the beach.
