njquiltergirl
Hi. With all this cold weather comes the heat...and dry air. I noticed a lot more black stuff on my table and wheels. Does any one know if it is related? Should I add moisture...like a humidifier? Or is there too much moisture in the air causing this? My wheels that ride on the table seem sticky...the ones on the carriage are still fowing along nicely. I cleaned them well and was amazed at the black stuff! Any ideas? Any aluminum specialists out there that can explain why they get black in the first place?? I know we are not supposed to wax them anymore, but I wonder if there are any other things we can do to reduce this. Thanks! Sharond
Lisa, What kind of wheels do you have? I have the edgerider wheels on my machine. After every quilt I cleam the wheels, where they meet the rails. I do this with rubbing alcohol and q-tips. I then use batting scraps that I cut into smaller squares 3x3 and put some rubbing alcohol on them and wipe of the rails. The next day when I start I rewipe the rails with alcohol. You will notice alot of black oxidation on the batting if you have not been wiping them off regularly. I asked my son who is a chemistry student what I could do to prevent it. He suggested waxing the rails, oil or grease. Obiviously oil and gease are not an option. If the wax would work, I would do it. I just don't know anyone who uses wax. Good luck,
bobbi
When I had the brown (composite?) wheels, I had the black "oxidation" constantly. I don't have that anymore with my edgeriders. But I do wipe everything down like Sharon does... My apt is extremely dusty too, so I use an old sheet to cover everything up when it's not in use.... njquiltergirl
Hi Sharon. APQS used to suggest waxing the rails but now say it causes more problems than it solves. I have not been cleaning them with every quilt. I thought every month was recommended. I have the factory wheels...they seemed fine. I'll give them another cleaning and clean them more often!
