Quilting Heidi
I assume that it has a scalloped edge? If so I would fold back the first scallop to get a straight edge. Lay that edge along a straight line that you stitch using big stitches that will be easy to pull out later (bad tension is your friend). Remember to leave enough room above the straight line to fold out the scallop that you have folded back. Once you have the top pinned into place then fold open the scallop and baste it down. CLear as mud?
sspingler
I load my backing and batting then lock my wheels and do a straight line of stitching across the top. I use basting spray to smooth the top in place and pin when necessary. Then I baste across the edges of the top as far as my machine will sew. This is the only time I float a top. When I get to the end, I use basting spray again to smooth across the bottom and baste in place. My basting is always 1/8" from the edge......unless I need to bring it in further then I use a 1" basting stitch.
