question about batting

Recommended Posts

I have a jn quilt to do custom quilting on. My customer provided Hobbs heirloom premium batting. I have not used it before and it seems thin to me. I am wondering if I should add a layer. I have dream blend and the middle weight cotton and poly(select weight). Could use some advice. Thanks in advance, K

I forgot to finish my thought about the batting. What she furnished to me is wool.

Adding a layer of something will help with stitch definition for sure.

Something to think about with JN quilts is there is usually miles of SID to do. A puffier batting will help disguise places where the points didn't exactly end where they were supposed to. Smaller pieces after SID may not need any extra stitching and backgrounds stitched densely give a lot of dimension to the quilt.

Traditionally, show-quilters will go for a layer of 100% cotton on the bottom and either wool or poly on top. The cotton is for weight and stability. The lighter batting is for stitch definition. Two layers of cotton isn't something I'd recommend. Of the choices you have and if it were mine, I'd opt for the Hobbs heirloom on the bottom and poly on top.

This JN quilt had 100% cotton batting. It's flat and in spite of the pretty scrappy fabrics, not very interesting.
