Della
Is it better to load the backing with the salvage edge pinned to the canvas or is it better to have the salvage on the sides. I have been putting the salvage to the canvas when I can but now am wondering.....thanks.
KathG
I'm not sure if it the correct way to do it, but I have pinned by the selvedge as long it did not matter which way the pattern goes. If I go the other way I alway tear a strip off to make sure it is square.
Anette D.
If it fits, I prefer to pin the selvage to the canvas. That way I have a better chance of getting the back on straight.

LisaC
If the backing is pieced, I prefer seam to run horizontally; in line with the rollers. I've had seams that run vertically stack way up on the backing roller and cause the whole quilt to have a hump between the leveling bar and the backer bar before its quilted. ( It adds fullness in the edges even when the quilt is perfectly square.) That usually determines which side has my selvedge edges; either side is good as long as everything is straight and square. Of course, you can alleviate this problem by floating the whole quilt; it's whatever works best for you.
