Two color threads

Trying to get a good tension balance for white thread on top and black thread on bottom. Still getting a peak of black on top especially where I change direction. I literally stop before changing so as not to pull bottom thread up. Am I trying to do something not possible. If so what would you recommend that would let thread blend. The back is pretty much black with little dots of color. The front is mostly white with pastel colors.

Double batting will give you more depth to lock the stitches. 

When the quilt is off the machine it will relax.
