auto-advance disengaging from roller

How do I stop this from happening? Today I was advancing a quilt when suddenly my roller was loose instead of snug. I saw that the round thing on the roller that attaches to, or interlocks with, the round thing on the auto-advance had come apart. My husband was able to put them back together. However, I am noticing that it is about to happen again so I have had to stop for the day. What's going on? How do I fix it for good?

Jessica, there is a Allen set screw that holds the coupler on to the take up roller, make sure that is tight. Also make sure that the motor itself is not sliding away from the coupler on the take up roller. You should have a black knob or a L shaped bolt underneath the motor that needs to be tightened so that the motor doesn't slide away on the bracket. Hope that helps!! :)

happened to me a lot until I took a wire coat hanger and bent it to use as a giant clamp. Fit one bent end into the motor mount and wrapped it under that and put another bend in it to keep the two pieces from pulling apart. Not pretty but works great.

Mark,

There is no Allen set screw. There's my problem. Actually, I don't see it anywhere. There is nothing on the floor. I wonder if I ever had one. I left a message with APQS to get back to me. However, if it is something I could by at the hardware store let me know. I would like to get back to work quickly.

Thank you for responding. I very much appreciate your help.

Jessica,

check your machine manual for the section on "Installing the Motorized Feed". Depending on your version, the page number may be different, but mine begins on Page 91. You'll see photos of how that coupler should be mounted. The allen screw accepts a 5/32" wrench to set it, so perhaps armed with that info you can head to the hardware store. But before you head there, read on.

That set screw holds the first coupler in place on your pick-up roller. The screw "bites down" into the flat portion of the "pin" that comes out of the roller itself. If the coupler is sliding around on the pin, or spinning, then the allen screw is definitely not working or is missing.

However, if the couplers are starting to "wiggle apart", then look under the motor itself for a black knob. Once the motor's coupler and the coupler on the roller are mated, that knob underneath the motor keeps it in place and prevents it from wiggling loose and sliding around on its mounting bracket. That could be loose, too.
