Leaving for Colorado

Recommended Posts

My husband and I will be heading to Colorado with friends for a motorcycle trip on the 26th. We'll be near Gunnison, Durango, Silverton and several other places I can't remember...mostly southern part of the state.

Any recommendations? (quilty or otherwise)

April,

My daughter lives in Durango. Make sure to stop at the quilt store while in Durango. There is the Durango Silverton Railroad also. It's a bit expensive but what a scenic ride on a old train. Durango will be very warm but Silverton can be cool. Are you going to Aspen? Independence Pass goes from Twin Lakes to Aspen and if you get up my way Twin Lakes is considered Colorado's little Switzerland. Gunnison used to have a fabric shop, Montrose and Grand Junction have quilt stores for sure. Lots of rafting up my way at Buena Vista, Salida, Canon City. From Durango to Silverton is beautiful. From Silverton to Ouray over the Millon Dollar Highway is a bit nervy as is Independence but well worth the ride. If you need the names of the shops send me a u2u. Have fun!

There is a great little shop on the Main Street in Cortez - Not too far from Durango and one in Pagosa Springs (It has some nice Yarns and a fiber co-op, too) . Golden has a very nice shop as well. We spent 2 weeks traveling all around Colorado - visited many shops - these were the ones that stick in my mind, as well as the one in Durango.

If you go to Golden - watch for the one way streets. They all of sudden split and their they are.

If you like Native American history, there is a great Anasazi museum in Dolores (jut north of Cortez). Also near Cortez, is the Four Corners site where four states meet. You can get several native american types of jewelery and things there plus they also have a casino on their reservation if you want to gamble. Between Durango and Cortez is Mesa Verde. This has the Anasazi ruins to see and beautiful scenery. Just watch out for deer in all of those areas because they're plentiful. If you want a scenic ride to that area, take Hwy 50 from Pueblo all the way to Montrose. It's mostly two lane and has only one pass to go over (Monarch). There are lots of camping places and hotels/motels all along the way. Right outside of Gunnison is Blue Mesa Reservior where you can camp and rent boats. About 20 miles outside of Montrose on Hwy 50 is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison (river). It's another amazing sight to see. Oh, I forgot to mention that here in Canon City, we have the Royal Gorge Canyon too. Anyway, remember to bring your cameras with lots of batteries because it's all beautiful (but then I live here so I'm biased! lol)
