After you decide what will be your "weight" in your cushion (I usually use rice) but after you wrap your rice bag in "wadding", wrap your wadding in steel wool before adding it to your cushion. The steel wool will sharpen your pins as you slide them in and out of the cushion. I use it all the time. It also will keep the barbs off your needles.
