Snow Dyeing

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Have a couple of questions about this topic. (Yes, Matt, only a couple!!!)

How long to you rinse/soak in the Synthrapol (or whatever you use) once the dyeing is done.

Do you have to soak the fabric in the soda ash before dyeing? Where do you get the soda ash?

I am on my second batch, and oh, no, I've discovered another passion!!

Any suggestions for colour combinations, I have only used 1 colour so far;). Or does everyone just wing it?

Thanks, will post pictures when I have all 4 done.

Thanks to everyone for such great creative inspiration!

HI Joanne,

I have a tutorial on my blog on how to snow dye, here is the link.

http://tamarackshack.blogspot.com/2011/01/snow-dyeing.html

After dyeing I like to rinse my fabric in cold water with TNA soap and then soak in hot water with Synthrapol ( Raycafix) for at least 5 minutes. If you using red/pink dyes them might need a second soak in the Raycafix if it is still bleeding.

YES you should presoak your fabric in soda ash...very important step.

If you use the search on my blog you will find quite a few posts with my snow dye results to see if you see any color combinations you like. You can mix the powder in the snow first or just pour the liquid dye mixture on the snow...both give great results.

It is VERY ADDICTING!!

I am pretty much done snow dyeing for this winter as the snow here is very icy as it melts....the light fluffy snow in January yielded the best results for me.

I get all my dyeing supplies from G+S Dyes in Toronto and us MX procion dyes.

Hope this helps!
