NQR - Help identifying old Singer machine

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine found this, her grandmother's old Singer, and we don't know what it is. It appears to use only one thread, no bobbin, which I've never seen before. Anyone have any ideas where to go for more information about this?

Thanks

Looks like a chainstitch machine to me. I have a Wilcox and Gibbs chainstitch and it also has no bobbin. Some on this site use the old chainstitch machines to attach quilts to their leaders. The thread can be pulled and the all stitching just zips right out. I think Linda Sterling uses her Wilcox and Gibbs for this -- she can probably explain it better. Mine just sits on the shelf and looks cute.

Having said this, I have never heard of an old Singer chainstitch machine. Perhaps this is something very rare.

Thanks so much for the website Lynn. She had queried Singer, and they said they didn't know anything about such a machine. So armed with the info on the Singer 24-62 chainstitch, now maybe she can figure out a value for it. Based on the serial number search it looks like it was made in 1875! Belonged to her great grandmother, and now she thinks maybe she should find a home for it.

I knew this forum wouldn't let me down - - you guys are the BEST!

Wow this is cool. I pulled out my Mom's old Singer sewing machine and discovered it was made in 1941. She'd love this info. as she was born in 1944. The machine was a high school grad. present from her parents. Last time I used it it worked but only with metal bobbins. And if I used anything else boy what a mess I had.
