hmulder
I am having an issue with using minky for my quilt backings. I find that the fuzz of the minky pulls up to the top side of the quilt. It is visible anytime the backing is a different color than the fabric on the quilt top, especially in the areas with a light background. It looks like tension dots on the front side of the fabric, until you look closer and see that is it the minky fuzz showing up on the front side of the quilt. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? I have tried adjusting my tension and using a new needle, but I'm not sure what else to try. delld
What size needle are you using and what thread?
quiltmonkey
Yes, This happens sometimes.... and sometimes it does not. Here are things to consider: try a smaller needle - that might help a lot. There are some "fake" minkee brands out there that I've quilted and they tend to "tuft" to the top of the quilt. You might have fake minkee. It's a bummer... the only thing I suggest is to use a same color thread (or similar shade) as the minkee and that will help camoflauge. Try a smaller needle. BunkHouseQuilts
I have found that this is often worse with cotton thread. I always use Superior "So Fine" on my minky quilts for this reason.
LadyLake
I haven't had this issue, and maybe because of what Ann said -- the Bottom Line pre-wound bobbin I use won't bring up the minkee fuzz, like a thicker and/or cotton thread.
elviraquilter
I also only use Poly thread (So-Fine). I had the same issue with the fuzz pulling to the top when I used cotton thread.
meg_marsh
Another thought - are you using any batting?? Even with a minkee backings I use some sort of thin, light weight batting. I used Dream Angel from QD (the flame retardant batting) on my last minkee quilt and it was wonderful - great draping and did not get stiff plus I know it will wash beautifully. I also agree that some of the lesser quality types of minkee are a pain to work with.
Sandra Darlington
As far as the batting, I like using either the Dream Angel or Dream Green when using Minkee or fleece on the back. I mostly use So Fine , but I used Glide and Magna Glide bobbins on the last 2 fleece backed quilts I did and they looked great, too.
