If you want to accentuate the points of the flower petals, stitch CCs into the points. The base square could have a quarter-circle with the center of the circle on the base of the flower. Stitch from corner to corner and fill it with rays--either straight or squiggly. If you want to soften the petals, here's a treatment of petal shapes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/larech/9544911831/ On this one I echoed the curved petals with another set outside the piecing, using thread to match the background. I would stipple around the flowers, then in the flowers I would continue the stem up to each of the center points with a curlique toward each point and add a curlique to each side .
