Loud Motor Ideas?

Recommended Posts

I have been quilting for 20 years. I have an Ultimate I, and had everything on it refurbished, upgraded, etc... a little over 1 year ago. Including a new motor. The problem is that I do alot of pantograph quilting, so my right ear is starting to give me problems because of the loud motor. There is not anything wrong with the motor, it is just loud, and I have 6 foot ceilings in my quilting loft, so just looking for suggestions that other quilters might have to cut the sound without completely blocking out.

Thanks and have a great day!

I carry foam earplugs at all times. Can't stand the volume in movie theaters, casinos etc. They block the "noise" but still allow the "sound" to come through. Does that make sense? They are sold in packs of 10 for a couple of bucks at Target, WallyWorld etc.

I went to a class once and her machine was so quiet, I had to ask her what she did. She said she called APQS and got some grease to pack up under her machine. You have to take the machine off and turn it upside down to do it.

I have ordered the grease, but haven't gotten up the nerve to take my machine off to do it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the foam earplugs, but can't get any that are comfortable, so picked up some silicone ones to try this week. I had read about the grease, but hate to take the motor off, and I haven't ever had to do this before and have used this machine 18 years. I have had it serviced at APQS 3 times, so I suppose they grease it there.

Have a great week!:)

I think we're talking about two different noises. The grease goes behind the bobbin area underneath the machine to solve a rattly type noise there.

If you're talking about noise from the motor while your ear is near the motor while doing pantos, the grease doesn't affect that noise.

If the earplugs don't work, you might try looking for some comfortable, snug fitting cordless headphones. I use those most of the time while quilting and I suppose it's a trade out . . noise from the headphones or noise from the motor.

My husband is a safety engineer and he always thought the Ult. I motor noise was too loud and kept meaning to bring home one of those tester things from work but never did. I used the Ult. I for 3 years and recently had my hearing checked for something else and it was fine.

I have some of those foam rubber stick on things that you get to put on your furniture legs on my motor to help reduce the noise.

It does not eliminate it totally, but it does reduce it.

The only thing with that is, you have to take the cover off to get to it and it is a tight fit, it may be a little struggle to get it back on and tightened down.

Blessings and hugs

the Ult 1 motors by nature will always be loud, things that you can do are replace the brushes, APQS stocks these, when you do this blow out the motor there is a lot of black soot which builds up inside, if the belt is streched it can cause extra noise, they are cheap and available through APQS. when DeLoa had hers i inserted a small piece of rubber between the machine and the motor, (Heater HOse like used in cars cut in small strips) then there is the chance that the motors bearings are shot and the motor needs to be serviced, you can take it to any electric motor repair shop and they can rework it for around 40.00 or you may just want a new one. As for greasing the machine in the gear box area be sure that you have all the right things first, so call connie she will fix you up. The new DC motors being used by APQS now are smooth and very quite but to my knowledge can not be added to the Ult1, or 2 you may want to think of trading in your Ult1 for the freedom you may be suprized with the value you machine still has as a trade, give us a call we'd be happy to help.
