Lynne in Iowa
My aunt asked me this weekend if I could quilt an old top from her grandmother. She doesn't want anything fancy, just an all over pattern to stabilize it for the future. I haven't seen it yet, she says it is just a utility quilt meant for everyday use. I've never done an old top before. What do I need to know/watch out for?
Guest Linda S
Lynne - check all the seams to make sure they're not coming apart so you don't catch your hopping foot in them. Also, check the fabric for any worn or torn spots. If you find any, you'll need to back the fabric with some stabilizer so it doesn't fall apart. I have three antique quilts coming up to do and they are in good shape, except one needs to have the borders removed and re-attached. The fabric and the seams are in good shape, so I'm good to go. Primitive1
As far as quilting it.... I would just go with a loose meander if that is ok with her as it would be easy to control where you are going and miss those seams that may give you problems. Enchanted Quilting
Also point out if there are any spots on the quilt prior to your starting to quilt. It's kind of fun helping to finish projects that are old...I try to imagine what was going on in their time and lives when they made the quilts:)
