fotch
We're excitedly awaiting our new Millenium and have a zillion questions...as we're newbies to LAing we'll need and want tons of practice. So one of our first questions is about practice fabric. Can we initially use some inexpensive cotton broadcloth blend and a muslin backing until we get the hang of it? We understand using quality fabric for our quilts, but does it make a difference for practice sandwhiches? Any thoughts or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. fotch
JustSewSimple
I used garage sale (50 Cents a yard) for practice. It was a poly-cotton blend but was of a nice thickness. As you quilt you will be quilting on different fabrics with different thicknesses so practice on what you can find and learn to use your different threads. Good luck. Heirloom Quilter
You can even sandwich your batting between two pieces of muslin. When you get that piece all quilted throw another piece of muslin on top of the one you finished and quilt it all over again. You'll save money by using the practice piece again and you'll save time in reloading the whole backing, just leave it on the machine.

Gail O
Old cotton or poly cotton sheets (the lowest thread count you have) work too. Tear the side and top seams off. Welcome to the family.
