seaming the backing

Recommended Posts

Is there a right way to sew a backing ? I've had customers who make a wide seam and press it open ,others who make a quarter inch seam and press it to the side . It seems to me that a wide seam pressed open is better creates less tension . I'd be interested to hear your opinions.

Arby - if you click on "search" in the upper left corner you could find other

threads where we have talked about this - there are MANY different

opinions and thoughts... I have heard that it is a good idea NOT to put the

seams in the middle, because the quilt usually will get folded there and that

will put to much stress always on that seam......hhmmmm....

As for me - I make a wide 1/2" seam and press open. Trim off the selvedges

so that they will not pucker later. If a customer brings one with a wide

enough seam, selvedges still on, I at least clip them ever now and then....

Good luck and you will find a way that works best for you!

When I get a backer with the selvedges left on and a narrow seam, the customer gets it back to re-sew. If the seam is wide enough to trim the selvedges off, I mount the backer with the seam horizontal and then advance until the seam is on top of the front roller. Now you can trim those selvedges easily (I trim each one separately) with a sharp scissors.

Also, after trimming, the seam can be pressed flat with a travel iron or one of those Clover mini-irons right on the roller--don't burn yourself!! Usually I don't bother to iron but just make sure the seam is open flat when I put on the batting. Just a thought to share.
