Counter weights??

Recommended Posts

I recently caught a glimpse of some of you Ladies discussing counterweights. I would like to know why you would use counterweights and where you would place them on the Machine. Sorry if this has been discussed previously, can't seem to find it in the topics.

Thanks a bunch

Monika,

There has been a lot of discussion about it. Sharon Schamber is actually the one that started it. There are 3 threads I think that have the most information. I think Sherry started it in her post at: http://www.apqs.com/quiltboard/viewthread.php?tid=9041

Then there were these:

Monika, do you mean the rice bags? If so, they are used to put a little "drag" on the machine, allowing the quilter better control for very controlled lines, patterns, etc.

They would go on top of the quilt near the take up roller, or leveler roller below the take up roller, and be moved as you advance forward, or side to side. They would sit on an extra base made similar to the base extender.

They would give the control instead of trying to tighten wheels, or pad the rail, to keep the machine from being free rolling.

It really does help.

I tried the rice bag technique recently and it really did give me control for the small work. I liked the control it provided - BUT I started having thread breaking, constantly. When I removed the rice bag all was smooth again. Has anyone else experienced tension issues or thread breakage? I\'m going to give it another go.

I\'m going to give it another try tomorrow or the next day. I have some very detailed work to do on shams and I\'d like to use the weight for added control. It comes out beautiful, all my back-tracks were right on. Not that I\'d do alot of my custom work with the rice bag weight - as it does take a toll on my wrists.

Having seen Sharon Schamber work in a class at Innovations, and watched some of her videos, I decided one morning to try adding a little drag to my Liberty. Only thing I could find in the house that looked likely was a two pound bag of beans. I just plopped that on the top of my machine, and there it still sits. Just a couple extra pounds seems to make a difference.
