Lemon Tree Tami got a reaction from meg in Quilt for Pulse ... hearts quilt
I've had the pleasure of quilting a charity quilt top that will be sent to the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild to hand out to the survivors, victims' families and first responders from this summer's terrorist attack in Florida. The request was for rainbow colored hearts so I jumped for joy when I discovered this perfect digital e2e design by Keryn Emmerson called Rainbow Hearts. It also stitched out beautifully and will be used again. I pieced the backing from two Northcott cheater panels with a solid blue.

I've just finished a few client quilts that are improv pieced. This one came off the frame earlier today and I'm in love with the colors of it. Doesn't it just look like a lot of fun to make?!
The panto is Modern Maze by Krista Withers. So Fine 50 wt Superior Threads in color Ferrari Green (my go to color for these multi color quilts.) The batting is Quilter's Dream Cotton Deluxe loft batting which added a nice heft to it for a wall-hanging. That gorgeous purple ombre' backing is a Marimekko fabric that my client found at the Crate 'n Barrel outlet in Berkeley, CA.

I still have my air compressor, a cute little red one. Love it. I have already told my husband I am taking it back
I already have plans for a saddle stool. I know it is a must.
I like the idea of the Alex cabinets. I saved a pictures from Pintrest:

I have a plan for a cutting table. The old one I have is one of those tables from JoAnns. I keep finding screws in the floor and it wobbles more and more. I am planning to put the screws back in and list it for a dandy price on Craigslist.    I have sketched out an idea for a table for my DH....he said it looks good, but he hasn't jumped on it yet. Really, a table would be in the way of getting the machine in, so I can wait a week or two

You all know that I have really been working hard to build my customer base, including taking some less that perfect tops and doing the best I can with them.  A new customer contacted me and wanted quilting done. Nothing fancy- just a groovy board.   I was all set to start on it, but I ran into several problems.  The top was terribly out of square and had a parachute in the middle. The backing was 4 inches too narrow.  There is simply nothing I can do with it.  Here is the letter I sent by email today.

    Dear ,
I find that I will be unable to quilt your top at this time.  As a longarm quilter, one of the things I must do before loading a quilt on the frame is insure that it is square- both the backing and the quilt top. This is necessary to maintain a straight and evenly spaced pattern, and to prevent taking tucks or pleats in the quilt top during the quilting process.  Unfortunately, your quilt top has some discrepancies in width and length.  There are a number of reasons this could occur, and if you need advice on remedying the situation I can help.
The top narrow width of the quilt is 103.5 inches.  The other narrow end is 102 inches.  Across the center, the quilt is 108.5 inches.  That leaves a difference of 5 inches.  There is no way to quilt that flat and maintain the integrity of the quilt top.  You will end up with a big "cup" in the middle that will have to be eased in by taking tucks or moving fabric around.  In a quilt with so many straight lines and 45 degree angles, that would mess up the look your beautiful piecing pattern that you put so much hard work into.  The lengths on the long side have a similar issue.
The most common reason this occurs is because people cut the outer sashing strips to a certain length (usually what the pattern says) and then pull that long straight piece tight as they attach it to the pieced quilt top. The easiest way to fix it would be to create new outer sashing strips that are closer to the actual measurement of the pieced section.  By removing your outer borders and placing your quilt on a hard flat surface, you can see if it is truly flat and square. then cut the outer strips to fit.
I will be returning your quilt top, backing, and batting in the original box it arrived in. I will mail your check back in a separate envelope.  If you are able to get the sashing strips adjusted so the quilt is square and flat, I will happily quilt it for you.  It is really stunning and I can tell you put a lot of hard work into creating it.

Update:  After receiving my email, he sent a message back and asked if I could fix it.  I explained that it would be $15/hour to take it apart, square it up, and add new borders.  I estimated about $100 worth of work, but explained that I will keep meticulous records.  He wants me to repair it for him. He also ordered four yards of 120" backing that is being delivered to my house.  It is really a pretty quilt.  I will post pictures when it is finished (which might be a month or so)

I did it!!!  I found a Freedom for sale, and bought it!!! Yay, it is used, but I am sure it was loved. Now to restock my quilting room. I will leave my signature as, "a future owner of a Millie", just in case Dawn gets crazy and gives one away and I win

I have a IKEA cabinet drawer set called ALEX that I store all my pantos and threads in.   Since the drawer are shallow I can easily read what pantos are in each draw with a  quick glance...if I have them turned all the same direction!

This one was finished on 12/24 for a Christmas gift for my 18 year old Whovian daughter! The pattern is "Relatively Dimensional." I used minky on the back. Now I have to make another for myself! I digitized the embroidery on my embroidery machine so it would look official.

My daughter made me this fun sign for my Quilt Cave for Christmas. I love it!

I am making progress on the TV wall. I need to get a longer TV power cord and some AV cables before I hide the wires.

I hope to put up the template rack, stencil holder and design wall over the next few days. It's so nice that the only home improvement we are doing involves getting my Quilt Cave set up just right. This is truly is turning into My Happy Place!

Lemon Tree Tami reacted to Bonnie H in Tips to manage batting on frame
If you roll the batting onto a heavy, long tube (batting tube or 2 or 3" PVC pipe) and lay it on the floor in front of the machine, the extra weight of the tube with the batting evenly rolled around it will help keep the batting taut and manageable. I just happen to stick mine in my hammock/sling, but you really don't need to have a sling for that. As you advance the quilt, it really helps (at least on my kind of frame) keep the batting in place and not bunching. I rarely have to adjust batting when I do this with a large quilt ... but it helps to have a long, heavy tube with the batting nicely rolled on it.
