MarieBrewer
Does anyone know if a furier can get the musty basement smell out of a fur? I got a beaver one on ebay and the guy said it didn't have any odors. Evidently he can no longer smell. He said I can return it but I want your opinions. yankiequilter
You probably have a limited amount of time to return the coat to the seller so if it were me I would take it to a professional fur cleaner ASAP and ask them if they can get the odor out of the coat. JustSewSimple
I once had a fur that got a bit of smoke smell. They cleaned it and ruined it.. Good thing I had insurance. That might be the way to go. Insure it and then have it cleaned. That way you get your money back.
LinneaMarie
You can also put it in a garbage bag with cheap kitty littler, the kind with baking soda in it. Tie up the bag and leave it overnight. The littler will not damage the fur. You might have to leave it for more than over night. My grandmother used to hang her mink outside on a cold windy day, and it always smelled great! Be careful of other critters investigating though! JoAnnHoffman
Hang it outside in the freezing air for a few days. That usually works. You can also have it reglazed at a furrier. They tumble it in walnut shells to clean and revitalize the fur.
Mercedes
Be very careful cleaning an old fur - especially if the skins are somewhat stiff. The fur may fall out. I would take it to a furrier immediately and get their opinion and if it can't be cleaned to get the smell out or if cleaning would cause other damage, I would return it ASAP....Mercedes
