Dayna
I am quilting a thick quilt, with 2 layers of wool batting, wool backing, and wool quilt top. Do I need a heavier needle to go through all these layers? Has anyone ever quilted a quilt like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Quilting Heidi
Dayna I would think a 4.0 would work for you. If you feel like you are having problems you can go to a 4.5. I'm working on a quilt right now that has a layer of wool, a layer of quilters dream delux poly and some areas have trapunto with dream puff. I haven't had any problems. When I have to stitch the area with the 3 batts the biggest problem I have is using a ruler.
Bonnie
I wouldn't be as concerned about needles as I would be for the height of your hopping foot. If its really really puffy and your hopping foot isn't high enough you have a huge chance of quilting in tucks as you move around the quilt. As you quilt folds and bubbles may form and if your foot creates a fold and the needle nails it into place you may not be a happy camper. You may need to raise it one more business card, so instead of using what the manual requires you add one more to the stack and readjust it. Just remember to put it back when this quilt is finished. Thread and needles should stay the same.
sewlinzi
Needle 4.0 will be OK I have done double bat with wool and dream puff/polydown and even 2 layers of dream puff...
LinneaMarie
Bonnie nailed it! I think the hopping foot height is what to look for. The needle will go through those batts like butta!!
