lcquilting
Well I'm finally getting around to trying out some new gadgets I've gotten lately!! The Alto Cutting system is awesome! I love it! (Thanks Beth!) Makes figuring and cutting so much simplier!! Almost have a full size quilt cut out in only an hour or so! And I also got a serger today that I was able to play a little on. Just a cheapy from WalMart but I think it will work just fine sewing up all those cloth diapers I'm making for our little one coming this fall. And I have some pther projects in mind for it too.... I guess staying busy with my new toys will help keep my mind off the pregnancy complications so that's a plus. And I'll be getting some projects done at the same time. I see the specialist on Aug 6th so keep your fingers crossed and prayers coming that we get a good report!

shirleyl
Nothing wrong with a cheapy serger. Have you sewed Minky with it. I serge the tops together and then quilt them with an all over pattern. The other way to do them is to load the back and batting and then using he chanel locks sew the strips on using the long arm. Depends on the look you are going for. Another thing I do on some quilts that will be well loved is I serge around them before binding. That way if the kiddo's pull on the binding too much the blanky doesn't fall apart. You know if you need something picked out, get a 5 year old to help. They think it is fun. lcquilting
haha funny Shirley! I have my 3 and 6 year old pick the basting threads off my leaders all the time. They have a blast. Then the 6 year old gets to use the shop vac and suck them up!

lcquilting
Can anyone tell me why people piece quilts with a serger? I seen/heard of ladies doing this but can't figure out the advantage to it....suggestions? Also wondering if I can use my quilt thread in the serger? I primarily use PermaCore, cotton/poly blend..... Quiltsinmotion
a friend has done some quilts with a serger ~ her reason it leaves no threads
Front Porch Quilting
I can tell you one reason why not to piece with a serger! My sister and I did one for my Mom, it was a log cabin and it used a TON of thread and was really heavy after it was done! Never used the serger for a quilt again... o2b Quilting
Most sergers can sew stitch faster (Stitches Per Minute) than a sewing machine so some think they can piece faster on the serger. Me...I don't go that fast when piecing. I need to go slower for control.
shirleyl
It uses a ton of thread to use the serger. I only use it to piece fabric like Minky. It sheds so much stuff that I get tired of cleaning out my dsm. The serger keeps is from shedding and stretching as it likes to do. I do go around the outside of some quilts that will be well loved, I've even put binding on while doing it, then stitching the back with my dsm. Other than that I don't use it much. It was used when I was a 4H Leader of a sewing group for the nice finished edges of garments, etc. As they were judged on it. But other than that, I have it so I have to justify keeping it. So I find a few uses for it. I have only tried cheaper thread on mine, since it uses so much; however, I do believe there is nothing wrong with trying what you have. I have used spools of old thread to use them up. But not the more expensive threads. Hope this helps. Shirley
