Della
Hi....another new quilter question. I am anticipating a quilt coming to me today that is a Sun Bonnet Sue. My question is do I stitch around the figure before filling in the background or just fill in the background? Thanks!
o2b Quilting
I have seen it done both ways. Some stitch around the applique with invisible thread some use colored thread. I would talk it over with the customer to find out what she is wanting you to do.
Quilting Heidi
I have done it both ways but prefer to SID first and then fill in.
sspingler
SID first then fill. I find that the fabric shifts if you do the fill first depending on the batting used.
Zora
Applique doesn't look nearly as nice if you don't SID around the applique. You might get away with it if you do a very tight background fill, right up to the edges. If your customer is unwilling to pay for the SID, then do the best you can with your choice of background fill. Most applique, like these large Sunbonnet Sues, need SID within the applique also, around the individual pieces or else they puff up and distort. This is an ambitious project for a beginner. By the time you get done with this one, you'll be a pro! You can do it!
Neher-in-law5
Can you do a fill that will allow you to stitch along the edges of the applique but not need to do a separate SID?
