Quilting with 100% cotton thread

Recommended Posts

I have a customer who requests 100% cotton thread for her quilts. I use Madiera Cotona in the bobbin and it works beautifully, but isn't strong enough to use as the top thread. I tried Connecting Threads Essentials on her last quilt but it gave me fits with frequent thread breaks. The thread was stiff enough so that it would not feed smoothly through the guides and tension discs. It would bow out at various places along the thread path and catch on things and snap - it would even make a little loop under the needle so that the next stitch would sew down the loose thread and make a mess. Any suggestions on how to make Essentials behave, or another 100% cotton thread you have had success with? Thanks in advance!

Carol:  It sounds like Sewers Aid might be the solution to your Essentials thread issues.  However, in the future you might consider YLI's Machine Quilting thread (not to be confused with their Longarm Professional), or Superior's Masterpiece.  Neither is inexpensive, but I've used YLI Machine Quilting (I apparently bought it by mistake thinking it was Longarm Professional), and it worked just fine.  The only reason I discovered it wasn't Longarm Professional is that it produced a lot more lint.  I don't like lint, so I started looking for the cause, and discovered it was cotton, no poly.  I haven't used Superior's Masterpiece to longarm with, but the piecers in our group really like it for piecing, so chances are good it might work well for quilting as well.  It is 50 wt, not the 40 I usually use and that might be a concern for you.  Just a thought.  Jim

I have used essential threads from Connecting Threads. I started out using ithe smaller spool at the back and It worked fine for awhile , then the thread started breaking. I adjusted the tension and moved the smaller spool (essential) to the front for smaller spools. It worked fine.

It's good to know I am not the only one trying various threads.
