Mercedes
Hi, I have an opportunity to purchase a couple of used gadget girl rulers but they're the 3/8" acrylic. Will these work on my 2005 APQS Millenium? Based upon the gadget girl site, I would need the 1/4" acrylic but I'm not exactly sure why 3/8" wouldn't work. Thanks....Mercedes
Bonnie
They will work for some things...but going around the thinner ruler, I think you would have problems with the back of your needle hopping up onto it when coming around a circle. The 3/8th rulers were made for the older ULT II's like mine that had the spoon foot on them, and they don't hop.... at least that is what I was told when I went to get some rulers from them and they didn't have any that were thin enough at that show. witha'K'quilting
I have hit my 1/4" rulers with the hopping foot...so I would hate to use rulers that are only 3/8" thick.
Mercedes
I'm so glad I asked this question before I purchased the rulers. Thank you so much! Mercedes
yankiequilter
If the rulers are 3/8" thick, isn't that 1/8" thicker than the regular LA rulers we use? If we use 1/4", then they are equal to 2/8", if my math isn't off. Or did I wake up too early this morning? Any reason we couldn't use a thicker ruler? Bonnie
Your right...I was thinking thin, but thicker is what I meant to say....
Mercedes
Does this mean I could use these rulers?
Bonnie
No....What I was trying to say before I had a case of tangled fingers is that...the 3/8th thick ruler won't fit behind the needle's foot...when your needle is in the resting place you don't have enough room, and you will have to raise your foot up to accomodate the ruler, which will make the hopping foot hop to high and make it dangerous to use if you should hit it with a ruler and snap a needle or get your finger in there....the 3/8 inch ruler was developed for my machine which doesnt' have a hopping foot and we can raise our foot up to get around it, and it still stays solid to the quilt...it doesn't have the excess room to catch you or the ruler. Less jamming of the needle bar and worst case you getting your finger in there.

sspingler
I have a few 3/8" thick rulers and I find for myself that I have more control and no way can I hit the ruler like I do sometimes on the 1/4" thick.
witha'K'quilting
I am embaressed now. And I am an engineer. Huh? I was totally thinking incorrectly. I can see Bonnie's point about them though. But then again, Sharon says that she uses the and likes them. I am still embarassed...so going to hide my head under a rock! seakitten
I've had trouble even with 1/4 inch rulers when using a thick batt (Dream Puff) and the Rulermate base. The extra thickness causes the ruler to hit the screw that holds the needle in. So, yes, there is such a thing as too thick.

MaggiS
ok, too many late nights/early mornings here due to harvest. My milli would function best with what thickness???????? Bonnie could you refer me to a site where I could SEE how to use a ruler while quilting. I am not sure what you are referring to when you say the ruler won't fit behind the foot. This is probably so simple I should just go hide under my bed and had a nap. Also Bonnie I printed off your fantastic directions on cross hatching ......... MEGA THANKS ...........but am wondering what you use to mark the "ticks". Thanks so much everyone, happy quilting

Thanks so much everyone, happy quilting Margaret, regardless of where you start on a template you will have to come back around it to where you started...I normally start at the 12 position and work right to bottom, left to top and tie off. Going the other way is your choice. [/img] My foot will look different than yours does, but the concept is the same...also my foot does not hop where your does. As far as what do I use to mark my tics with....whatever, blue erase marker, chalk, washable pencil...whatever to make a very tiny mark enough for me to see and the place to put the ruler. MaggiS
Bonnie million thanks for very clear photos and explanation. It is true that a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks a bunch for your time. How do you ever get any of your own work done? Now the rest is up to me to go and try this on the machine. Rome wasn't built in a day, right? Have a great evening. MEGA THANKS
