Tracey
Hey, girls. I am doing my first basting job for a hand quilter and I was wondering how far apart is good for that. Right now I am doing about 4 - 6" apart horizontally and the rows are about 4" apart. Then I will go vertically after the horizontal is done. Is that too much or not enough. Can anyone chime in?? I'm sure most of you are doing more interesting things on a Saturday night but if there is anyone out there........
Busy Quilting
I had read to do a large W shape across the quilt ( zig zag) then you only need to go one direction. I basted horizontally for my MIL last year then had to pull it out 12 months later when she decided she did what it machine quilted after all. Quilter 4 Jesus
Thanks for bringing up this question. I had wondered what the norm was.
juliagraves
When doing this basting, are you taking individual stitches, or moving the head quickly across the table to get really big stitches? Julia
ffq-lar
Either will work. Single-stitch gives you extra control but takes forever. Or set your stitch length low, no SR, and move as fast as the machine will allow. I stitch across 4", down 4", across, up, across, down--like a castle top. My next row is exactly the same but I do not let the corners touch the previous row (about a half-inch space between) This allows the hand quilter to move fabric if she needs to. I also baste all sides. Good money for a half-hour job usually--longer to load than to stitch!
sspingler
I turn my speed way down and move the machine fast.
