spacing when basting

Recommended Posts

Hey, girls. I am doing my first basting job for a hand quilter and I was wondering how far apart is good for that. Right now I am doing about 4 - 6" apart horizontally and the rows are about 4" apart. Then I will go vertically after the horizontal is done. Is that too much or not enough. Can anyone chime in?? I'm sure most of you are doing more interesting things on a Saturday night but if there is anyone out there........:)

Either will work. Single-stitch gives you extra control but takes forever. Or set your stitch length low, no SR, and move as fast as the machine will allow. I stitch across 4", down 4", across, up, across, down--like a castle top. My next row is exactly the same but I do not let the corners touch the previous row (about a half-inch space between) This allows the hand quilter to move fabric if she needs to. I also baste all sides. Good money for a half-hour job usually--longer to load than to stitch!
