KerryM
So a customer dropped this off a couple of days ago, and we decided on most of the top, CC in the star, motif of corner block and setting tris, I am stuck on this outer border though!!! How would you treat it, or for that matter, the inner borders???????? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Quilting Heidi
Kerry you really have lots of options (echo with straight lines, cc's with a little flourish, feathers). I would make my decision based on what you are doing in the big white areas. Do you have a plan for that? Are you going to SID the borders? Sheri Butler
Kerry...are you doing any feathers anywhere inside the inner borders? Cuz, you could do a slight weaving of feathers on the outer border...then just SID those 2 small inner borders!
KerryM
The white areas will have a leaf type block treatment, and yes I was going to SID the small borders...No Feathers, she doesn't like them. She likes less rather than more quilting, so something simple. Heidi, can you show me CC's with a little flourish??? maybe a leaf or a vinetype thing? Quilting Heidi
Kerry, I'll have to draft it up tonight. I can't draw at work. I have a couple of ideas to try out.
KerryM
Heidi, thanks no rush, I have another King size ahead of it, should start it tomorrow!
KerryM
Another question though, would you include the white border in the blocks and tris or as another inner border?
Quilting Heidi
I would treat the white area as one since it already has 3 other borders. My guess is that she wanted that star to look like it was floating.
Guest Linda S
Ribbon candy is really good in inside borders. See my blog and the quilt at the top. It's easy to do quickly and it looks perfect even when it isn't. I'd feather the white triangles in the outer border and then perhaps just follow those triangular lines about 1/2" to an inch apart. Neher-in-law5
On the outside pieced border I see a flowing design running through the colored pieces and the white inner triangles and the outer pieced triangles treated similar to the triangles in the center. For the inner borders SID and or ribbon candy or even alternating half hearts using the center seam as the center point on the half hearts. Quilting Heidi
Kerry, Here is a really crude quick drawin. I'm really tired and a bit brain dead but I think you can see the little flourish area I as talking about. I do this on quilts and it really goes quickly and adds a lot of movement. I didn't give you a whole lot of ideas but maybe a few to get the juices flowing.
Janette
I know I probably sound stupid but I just wanted to check what cc's actually are, I keep seeing it on the forum, but not entirely sure if I am right in thinking curved cross hatching??? maybe I am wrong? Janette
Thanks Sheri, at least I know what I am reading now. How to achieve it mind you is another matter entirely !
Quilting Heidi
Janette, I got cc rulers from Kingsmen and I really like them a lot! For this one I do the cc's on the short side and on the long side I do a curve, swirl, curl. YOu can acutally put anything where the swirl is. Janette
Thanks Heidi, I will check out the cc rulers. I love learning new (well new to me) techniques. Thanks again !
Omega QW
Each corner square has a different pattern. This was a "practice" piece I did (cheap) for a relative if she would allow me to practice.
Omega QW
I have a set of about 10 nesting circle rulers that I use for my continuous curves. Somewhere among the ten, I can find the perfect size I need for any space.

kennan100
Kerry, that looks great! I love setting triangles and corner blocks. And the border idea turned out great, too, goes very well with the other areas. Good job! What did your customer say? Marilyn, Your feather designs are wonderful! Two completely different approaches to a Lone Star and it's going in my favorites!

peglu
That turned out awesome. It always amazes me the new life a quilt takes on after it is quilted. I love how you made that one come alive. Peggy
