Judi
O.K. I know - silly as it sounds I DO like to use my ruler and do SID work - here are some photos of a couple of quilts I just finished. Please check them out and see what you think. I have my favorite little ruler that is only about 6" long, made it myself, following the instrustions by Dawn C. from classes in Des Moines. This way, you can see if you like it, and will use rulers, before you invest lots of money into them. I still like to use the ones I made most of all!! Judi
Here is the back of the brown quilt. I know I could have used my Hartley Fence to do this, but in working from the front I feel more comfortable and I feel that I can hit the corners better. Not all quilts have SQUARE squares! Judi
Here is a great Purple Batik one I just finished too. Used Rainbow threads on this one - thought it would look good with the little bit of a sparkle.....
Judi
Oh - except in the corners and plain sides - I used bottom line - I really tried on those feathers....... How do you like 1/4" cross-hatching? I do like the look of cross-hatching - any size!!

Mary Beth
Very nice. Love them both. Don't you love Dawn C. she can make something out of nothing. I bet she could make a quilting tool out of a gum wrapper.

Judi
Elaine - I do have an 18" ruler that I made for the long lines, but I like the control of the little one better. Ya' know how you "look ahead" of your needle, where you are sewing too and not right at where the needle IS - have you ever had your ruler "hop" up a bit on the quilt, and kind of get hit between the needle set-screw and the top ridge of your foot - as it is coming down - OH - scares the heck out of a person! What a very bad noise to hear! Not to mention the wobble you get in you nice straight line! I like my little ruler best!

Judi
O.K. - Here is a photo of what I have and use. My little one is 6 1/2" long the curved one I had made for an applique quilt, but still use it now and then for that little hooky spot that can guide the foot. I do stained glass - so my guy there was more than willing to cut and grind the edges smooth of my rulers. I just needed to give him the size and shape I wanted. They do have a knife that you can buy at the lumber yard where I bought the plastic (1/4" thick) you kind of score it, than snap it apart. It did NOT work for me! Could not get a straight line or edge. After you get them the correct size - make your markings on one side of the ruler, I did this on top of my cutting mat. Wish I would have made each 1", or line more different colors. Then cover your marking with clear contact paper - sticky stuff. This will help keep them from wearing off. Then apply some type of gripper to the bottom of the ruler. This should be clear, but the Home Depot I was at only had white. This is the stuff that comes in a roll and you usually use it to put in your bath tub to keep from slipping. On my curved one I put the stuff on both sides because I need to turn it sometimes. Hope this explains everything - again I learned this way from Dawn C. so I can't take credit for it. But man - what a cheap way of making a bunch of rulers! Well, my glass guy cut them for free - so theres that too. Oh - almost forgot - Must have the 45 degree angle marked for lining up cross-hatching with blocks and such - Good luck! QuiltedCat
Hi Judy, I have had my little needle screw hit my ruler - Miss Millie just keeps going along and I have a nice little "I broke it" fit. I thought last week I needed to put "something" on my rulers - not enough coffee and I think very slow. Today they have little "grabbers" on them. Now I am ready to go. The Rainbow threads shimmer in the purple quilt. I am getting the Rainbow threads in this week and look forward to using them. What did you put in the bobbin and what size of needle did you use? Can't believe this dialoge has been available and I just joined last month - what knowledge from every one!
Judi
Linda - I love my prewound bobbins - the coats & clark brand that APQS carry, they have SO much thread on them!! If I have to wind my own, in order to match the backing, I use Bottom Line. HINT: have an extra bobbin holder, they use a different tension, this way you can just pop in the correct one for the kind of bobbin you are using!! I also have another one for when I use Mono poly thread on top. (This tension is really different on the bobbin too.) And one extra for "just in case!!" For the Rainbow thread - I use the smallest needle 3.5 - make sure it is a new one - for batiks fabrics - check and maybe change during one quilt if it is really big - and I have to loosen my upper tension. Sometimes need Sewers Aid too - LOVE that stuff!!
