DoryJM
I'm working on a large log cabin quilt (103 x 103). It is the traditional (?) setting with the large, light areas just begging for feathers. However, the area is appx. 9 inches across... Any suggestions on how to manage feathers that large?? ffq-lar
Hi Dory, If the Log Cabin is all diagonals, draw the spine using a curved line all through the diagonals. Hooked feathers work well and allow you to tuck a smaller feather under a larger one to fill in the long stretches with the same density quilting. Then you don't have to strrreeetttch out the feathers to fill the space. If you are doing longarm feathers, the same can be done with a half-size feather and a bigger one curling around it. I'll see if I can find a photo. This one has hooked feathers--hopefully you can see where two and sometimes three feathers come off the same spot on the spine and fill in a long stretch. I hope this helps.
witha'K'quilting
a 9 inch area means that each feather would be approximately 4.5" on each side of the spine. Maybe a different shaped feather...more like a leaf...would look nice. know what i mean...jellybean.
Guest Linda S
You could branch your spines.
LadyLake
You could treat each log cabin block separately with feathers.
DoryJM
Thanks, everyone...that is a ton of help. I haven't decided yet whether to feather or do a leaf meander. I like the way you did yours Linda and I like the idea of doing each block individually, as well. Geez, I HATE making decisions!

Bekah
Linda love your quilt. Dory so glad you asked this question because the quilt I previously posted has large areas to fill also along the log cabins.
