Unlikely Commission delivered

Recommended Posts

I can't remember if I mentioned on here, but earlier this year I got a rather odd comission. I lady contacted me and said that having looked at my web site I was ideal for her commission, a pink flowery quilt. This is funnier if you've heard me talk about people misconceptions of qulting, I always say it isn't pink and floral. I guess someone was listening and has a sense of humor. Anyway as you can imagine it wasn't an asy task for me but I think it went rather well and today I delivered it to her husband, who was thrilled. I haven't heard for the customer yet, but I am not surprised, I didn't hear a lot from her during the design process. I think she would have been quick to let me know if she hand't liked it. Part of me would have liked that, I am very proud of this quilt and would hapily have put it into shows. There are a lot of pictures of it on my blog (did I mention proud :)

On the subject of shows, I think my MQS quilts are now back in the UK being held by customs. I am working on getting them back. I tried working out how much money I have lost trying to enter the show (no fault of the show I hasten to add). I think it is nearly 2000 pounds now in costs and time spent trying to sort out the mess. I've checked the DHL contract and it doesn't look like I can claim any compensation from them at all. I just hope the eventually manage to get my quilts back to me.

I will keep trying to enter US shows, but I won't use DHL again.

Ferret strikes again! Pretty in Pink turned out great! I think you did a great job on the fabrics and positioning the flowers. They look like they were just scattered across the bed. You have a really good eye for balance and space. Your quilting design is perfect for this, it all just flows together so nicely.

On using the star fabric in a quilt for yourself... having seen your nudes and others have you thought in terms of maybe that fabric representing a dream? Aspot of fanasty color on an otherwise dark, very sober, "adult" theme? It really has me thinking....

While I was in IMQS I talked to one of the ViP of the show and said that was beginning to be a problem. So you are not the only one. I would suggest to mail 3 month ahead. That should get your quilts in on time in case customs holds it 45 days. I think they will change the rules for oversea entries to accommendate overseas shipments. Nita

Thanks for the compliments guys. I am so thrilled with how this one turned out.

Nita, the problem with shipping 3 months in advance is it ties up the quilts for a long time, and I can't really afford to do that. They have other shows to go to and I use them in my lectures. If I did that for all the American shows I wouldn't have any of my latest and best work.

Theoretically (having talked to both sets of customs) if you get the paperwork right it should get through pretty quickly, just getting the paperwork right is tricky as it is done by the couriers. The couriers claim to know what they are doing but really they don't seem to be sure about this area.

I've been advised to either use FedEx or one of the specialist exhibition couriers in future, so we will see how that works out. It would be nice to have a slightly larger delivery window though, it just gives a bit of a safety net.

I have just found out that my quilts are being released from customs and that I was right, I don't need any of the numbers codes and registrations I have been told to get. Fingers crossed they will be back with me Monday or Tuesday.

There is one bright side to this, I lost the forms to have my quilts appraised, so I hadn't paid for that to be done. At least I didn't waste that money :)
