fleece

Recommended Posts

I do lots of fleece, just finished 4 last week. Some are double fleece, some are backed with fleece. The important part is to make your sandwich loose on the frame, pulling tight makes it stretch.

Here's just one double.

I love using fleece for backers. They quilt so nicely with texture. Sometimes I add batting, but on a few quilts I just have the top plus the fleece backer (no batt) and it quilts very nicely.

I've also used Minkee as a backer with success. And, Yesterday I stepped out of my comfort zone and decided to make a lap quilt (gift for a friend) using Minkee as the top and the back! I used Hobbs 80 20 as the batt. It quilted beautifull but girls.... it aint no fun to frog minkee cuz the stitches sink into the Minkee fibers and is hard to see. But, in the end it turned out very nice. Don't ask me why I did this (beating fist to forehead) but I decided to machine stitch Minkee as the binding! GOOD GRIEF! I am glad I gave myself 4 inches to work with as the binding but still...that was a PITA. But ask me if I will ever do this again and NOOOO it was just too much to do the top + back as minkee, but the result was luciously soft!

Hi Cheri,

I've been doing a lot of fleece quilts as gifts, and sold a few. It is the most "forgiving" quilting you will ever do! ;)

And a lot of fun! I buy two yards of fleece for large sofa type throws which allows me to do a 3" to 4" inch cut fringe. There is a very good tutorial on Vivian Love's Blog, and this is how I learned to do the fleece quilts.

If you want to take a look at a few of the ones I've completed here is a link to my Picasa album "Fleece Quilts".

BTW: Joann's had anti pill and most of their novelty print fleece on sale today. 50% off. I don't know if that sale run tomorrow too. I bought enough to make two more large fleece quilts today. Solid fleece is very nice quilted with a pantograph.

Tip: Have fun! and don't tension anything (rollers or sides) too tight. You can even up the edges afterwards when you trim the selvages. You just need to get it loaded and keep the layers rolling straight. (mostly) Fleece wants to move all over the place.

Angie,

Your quilts are beautiful and the link for directions very helpful. Hancocks online had their solid fleece for 1.75 and the novelty for 2.50 on Thanksgiving so I bought a lot to make up for Christmas gifts. I had not planned to quilt it but now can't wait to try. We have had Millie for about a month now and hubby has quilted 2 quilts beautifully! He loaded them and quilted them on his own. Things have not gone so well for me though. Maybe this will help.

Terry, after you decide how long you plan to cut the fringe then you cut out the corner .... I usually do 4 inch fringe for adults so I cut a 4 inch square out at the corners. Thank you for commenting on my posting. I also use my clamps on the sides just like a regular quilt.

Sandy,

Great tutorial! I have a question about the fleece...... does it have a "right" side & a "wrong"side? If so , the right sides of each piece would face out?I've never sewed fleece & bought 2 two meter pieces to do a throw as a Christmas gift. Load with the selvedges pinned to take up roller, don't stretch & quilt away?? Thanks ..... Val
