Quilting Heidi
Has anybody ever had an issue with wool bearding with a dark backer? I haven't and have a customer who just dropped off a quilt. She had brought white batting and I told her we might end up with a problem. I'm thinking I can use wool and shouldn't have an issue but if not I can always order a black batting. I only have a craft size on hand.
Corey
Wool should be okay, never bearded on me. White cotton backing will. Corey
Merryjo2003
I haven't ever had a problem with wool bearding, but black would be safe for sure. The only batt I've every had issue with the bearding was Warm and Natural on dark back and it wasn't severe but it did show. Of course, it was an art quilt with too much light on the front for a black batt and the W&N was provided by the customer. Luckily, I warned her ahead of time and gave her some alternatives, but she still wanted to use it. I think she was a little surprised when she saw it. KathyA
I was told (but don't believe everything you hear) that Hobbs Wool will beard, Dream less likely. What do the batting masters say? There's a site that has the results of batting tests. Does anyone know what that site name is?
Busy Quilting
I know I had problems with a pure wool batting from our equivalent of Joanne's bearding badly, ten years ago. I now use a wool 60/40 poly and have no problems. I am using it with a foundation pieced Batik top and batik backing fabric now with no problems. Lots of photos of the progress of this quilt are on my blog.
Farmland Quilter
I used Quilter's Dream wool in my grandson's graduation quilt with very dark blue batting and never had a problem. It's been washed multiple times. Will check it later today to be certain.
Quilting Heidi
Cheryl, Thanks. I use QD wool too and have never had an issue. My customer has a wool batt on hand, not sure which one but I'm thinking it will be fine.
Kay Anderson
I didn't have any problem with the last wool one I did with a black back. I don't think I would worry about it.
KathG
I had a problem with Hobbs wool/ bamboo mix. Mind it seemed to shed everywhere. I only use Quilters Dream in wool now and never had a problem with it.
Gretchen
Never personally had any problem with wool bearing. I usually use Quilters Dream, but customers also bring me Hobbs.
Primitive1
Don't think it would be a problem, but if the quilt is also dark on the front and you can get a dark batting, I'd go with that just to ease the stress...
