lizziesgirl
I LOVE to work from the front of the machine and prefer custom quilting over a pantograph any day. The ONLY reason is that I have to work from the back of the machine. Can't someone create some way to do pantos from the front.
ffq-lar
Hi Sheryl--- If you love working from the front, you don't need pantos!!!! Get really good at maybe 5 different overalls and go to town! I also do not like pantos and I have a library of overalls that I am comfortable doing. You can size them up and down easily and can still throw in a different design in sashings or borders. The only down side would be if the thread matches the fabric, or if the top is busy---you may have a harder time seeing where you have been. Then the thing you need is a good side light! I turn off the overheads and the light on the machine and the stitching jumps out! Pantos from the front would be hard as there is no place to put them to follow with the laser. Just my experience. Have fun! Linda in Olympia
lizziesgirl
Linda, I don't have a problem doing overall patterns, its just that there are some pantos that create a really neat scene and I love those but hate working from the back. Why can't they find a way so we can hang the panto on the wall and point the laser there and quilt from the front. Thanks,
GERRY
Hi Sheryl:) I know how you feel, but from the opposite side. Working from the back is what I LOVE to do & pantographs are my thing, I really like how neat & tidy the panto makes the quilt look, I've been practicing on working from the front, & my free-motion is getting better, but the back is where I'm comfy, If I could find a way to get a tiny panto into a sash, that would be great, it would have be done from the front, so the stop & start would be in the right places, & that would be wonderful, but until then I just have to PPP my free hand, until I get so good that it looks like a panto. Not sure that makes any sense,
chickenscratch
Sheryl, I love your idea of the pantos on the wall and the laser shining up there. Maybe I'll work on that one. Seems like something could be done with mirrors.
gable428
I'm with Gerry. I love doing pantos:) Sheryl, it's probably just a matter of getting used to being at the back of the machine. It is different at first, but you can get used to it. Don't dismiss it altogether until you've tried it a few times, because after a few attempts you might find that you really enjoy doing pantos. lizziesgirl
Thank you all for the support and I have done several pantos, I just love being able to see easily what I'm doing. Teresa let me know when you figure out the wall thing, I am first in line to buy. This is such a great place to vent. Its nice to have someone who understands. What a cool bunch we are. Cheryll
I love doing pantos. I've kind of set up a program for me to learn more advanced work with my machine by advancing the levels of the pantos I'll attempt. I'm still working on my own quilts so it's O.K. The practice with pantos is like a meditation for me. I love the sound of the machine whirring and sewing. I have now done one large quilt and a few smaller ones from the front but don't dismiss pantos especailly if you are just starting. Many customers will be able to afford pantos as opposed to custom work prices. I live in a rural area and some do not earn good wages.
Guest Linda S
I love it ALL! I like working from either side of the machine. Sure, it's nice when you work from the front and can sit down to quilt, but I dance when I do pantos at the back. Put on some tunes and boogie! chickenscratch
Sheryl, I have thought on it a bit. Couldn't you just tape the panto to the wall and turn the laser light so that it shines on it, but you can see it from the front of the machine. Mine doesn't have a top mounted laser light, but it seems like you could do it.
lizziesgirl
Teresa, I thought the same thing and voiced my brilliant idea to my family. My DH and oldest son informed my that it wouldn't work because the way the machine rolls and the panto on the wall, they say it just wouldn't work. Keep trying I know YOU;) can figure something out. Mary Beth
Wow, I was thinking that was a great idea too...until I really thought about it.
chickenscratch
Hey, somebody try it and see if it will work.
lizziesgirl
As soon as I get the quilt that I am doing off I will.
Mary Beth
I have a feeling the point of light will go in a straight line across the wall. Not trying to burst anyone's bubble. Hope it works...let us know.
lizziesgirl
It won't work. It just won't work. I tried and I really, really wanted it to work and it won't . (Just so you know I'm whinning right now) All it does is sideways and a slight slant, it just won't do it. Teresa, you're so smart you can figure something out. Thanks anyway. chickenscratch
Hey, at least you tried. I'll keep thinking of something. When I do I'll have to patent it and copyright it. Maybe that's how I'm supposed to make money with this whole quilting deal, by modifying machines. Maybe I'll put a turbo on mine or something. Mary Beth
Hey, I've got it...project the panto onto the wall then strap the laser to your forehead. It would take some getting use to - the motion of your head while you are quilting....but I think this has potential.
Bonnie
This could really work Mary Beth....but what happens when you decide to headbang to some great music.....its could get very interesting to say the least.
lizziesgirl
The only problem virtigo. Talk about spinning. The head-banging thing though could be pretty cool. We'll have to have Karen McTavish in on this one.
dancingstitcher
You guys are so funny with the panto on the wall. Myrna has it figured out. Hope she doesn't mind if I show you this photo of her 15" square design that she can replicate from the front of the machine using the laser light positioned to shine on the front of the Millennium. kennan100
adding the laser light on my forehead to the smoking pores, headbanging, naked quilting...whoa, guys, this is getting ugly.....
Mary Beth
Leave it to Myrna to come up with something that works..I was hoping someone would try my idea and video tape it...post it to a web cast so we could all watch it. Now that would have been interesing...And Bonnie, I did think about the music concept, I was still trying to work that one out.
lizziesgirl
Great idea Vicki/Myrna but what about a full roll panto. Myrna what can we do?
chickenscratch
Okay, I have figured out a way to do it using a mirror, but you have to angle the mirror a little bit to get the up down motion you need. The problem I'm having is that it distorts the pattern so it is really long and skinny. I think the trick is to get the ratio exactly the same so that the number of inches the light moves up and down on the wall panto is exactly the same number of inches the foot moves on the fabric. I'm a language arts teacher, I don't do well with math. Is anybody out there able to figure out what the angle on the mirror needs to be. Right now I have it at about a 70 degree angle.
