Anne from Guam
I have noticed my right forearm, wrist and the palm of my hand are getting strained lately. I have been doing a bit of quilting and I wondered if anyone else has this issue and what is the best remedy?
Anniquilter
Yes Anne, I get this too! I usually sleep with wrist braces on both wrists which helps a little - plus 'Aleve' or similar when needed. I strained both wrists in a car accident many years ago and from time to time they flair up. It's usually caused by doing something stupid like trying to move a piece of furniture without help or carrying too much weight with one hand. Then it doesn't usually show up until I quilt or drive . I just have to remember to think ahead and be more patient - and try not to do things that will put strain on my wrists. Good luck with yours! Darlene Epp
Change your hand position often. If you're holding onto the front of the handles all the time, try moving them to the sides, just cupping the round part in your palm. My students find when they do this their accuracy even improves. I have very bad, weak wrists and change my hand position at least once every 60 seconds. We're lucky we have these handles so we CAN change our hand position. Busy Quilting
Also double check where you have your hand while you are sleeping. I found I had very sore right wrist for no explanation, until I realised that I slept with it bent on the inside of my shoulder.
Bonnie H
I'm in physical therapy for my trigger finger release and all their patients do similar stretching exercises. I will see if i can upload some pictures of them. They say a person shouldnt do one activity for more than 20 minutes without moving and stretching. RitaR
Also, relax your hands.. I just use 3 fingers, well 2 fingers and my thumb, and a very light grasp. Now I have the computer guide, so don't have nearly so much to do with the long arm. Rita
