warm and white

Recommended Posts

I just read through some of the postings on batting poking through the back and thought I would share my experience with this. I bought 40 yards of Warm and White batting and used it twice now. The first time I had pokies and thought maybe the batting was loaded wrong. This last time I had pokies again, so thought I would experiment. I know there are a lot of variables, so here's what happened. I ripped out the stitches I had in my top and turned the batting around. Darn, if I didn't still have pokies. I had a new needle, and quilt shop quality backing fabric. I was sure the quilt wasn't loaded too tightly. I thought I did everything right. I was so angry! I took that batting out and replaced it with Hobbs 80/20 and wouldn't you know, I now have NO pokies coming through the backing. The only change I made was to the batting.

Has anyone used this batting with success? I have almost 40 yards of this stuff, Any advice?

Judy

Well I quilted a huge quilt with black backing and a Hobbs 80/20 and had horrible batting pokies. New needle, used thread lube, changed thread, loosen quilt on frame. In the end sat and pulled out hundreds of little bits of batting.

I have used Hobbs 80/20 many times not trouble. But I did notice that it was very nubby. Next day another 80/20 and the batting was very smooth, no nubbies. Of course there wasn't a batting poke on the quilt. I asked the black quilt customer if she had washed her huge batting and she had not.

I think with all batting, some batches are better than others. Even when purchased as first goods.

I use all types of battings and just once in awhile there is a stinker.

Thanks for the comfort. I talked to the store that sold me the batting and even though it's a hundred mile trip one way, they agreed to take it back and I think I will make the trip. The manager was extremely nice on the phone, so I am going to give Joanne fabrics a thumbs up.

Now I need to decide where and what to buy. This is going to leave me batless and batty, LOL.

Hugs to all,

Judy Z

Warm'n'white has a scrim side. This is the email I received from them awhile back.

PASTE:

Yes, the Warm & White has a scrim, the same as our Warm & Natural...one side will look more flat than the other, I would put the flat side to the back fabric...let us know if you have any other questions.

I did my own test with Warm and White and got pokies with either side down, however, I did NOT get any pokies with Hobbs.

I took the role of batting back and now need to find someplace to get a roll of batting to use for my quilting. Any good places to get batting online??

I use Warm & Nat, Warm & White and Warm Poly on the roll with no problems. Maybe you did get a bad batt.

I also use Quilter's Dream roll and bag batts. I have a wholesale account with them. QD has a wide variety of choices including black batt and no minimum order. I order it and a week later, my batts arrive.

Judy,

I have a big roll of hobbs 80/20, bleached white. Its nice for white background quilts.

I have been getting pokies with it. I have gotten it with regular Hobbs 80/20 too.

Its interesting that tsurich mention the nubbiness, because this roll is fairly nubby. The hobbs website states that the 80/20 has a light resin, which must act like the scrim.

The best solution I have gotten is the Sullivan's Silicone Spray (kmquiltingsupply). Spray it on top of the batting, so as the needle goes through it doesn't catch the batting. The last quilt I did I tried it for the first time and I had only 2 or 3 pokies on the whole quilt.:)

JudyLee,

Their cotton batt comes in 4 lofts (Request, Select, Deluxe and Supreme). I use their bags of cotton batting (Deluxe loft) when I want cotton that is a bit thicker than the Warm & Natural I have on the roll. The Request & Select are thinner.

I have used their Dream Wool for one of my own quilts and love it. Very little shrinkage.

I have their Dream poly on the roll in the Select loft which I feel is thinner than Warm & Natural's poly batt. The Dream Poly (Select) also comes in black (Midnight black)

I just ordered some kings and queens (I get lots of tweens - between queen and kings) in the Deluxe loft . I think that it feels a bit fluffier than the W & N Poly.

They also have a Dream Angel which is supposed to be good for kids quilts; it has a flame retardant. I don't get a lot of kid/baby quilts so I have never used this.

If you don't have a business license, you can buy QD in fabric stores, I don't think Joann's carries it, though. With the license, you obviously get a better price and you can order as many (or as few) as you need. No mimimum order.

Check out their User's Guide. It provides detailed descriptions of the batts including whether or not it has a scrim.

I just finished a quilt with pokies all over the back. It was wierd. there would be a long stretch without pokies and then the pokies would start again. After using the Sullivan's Silicone Spray could you see any affects on the quilt. Have you seen these quilts after washing them? I just want to be sure I don't damage a customers quilt by using something like that. Any experience after using it?

I think I am going to try the smaller needles (3.5) to see what that will do. I've bought an entire roll of the Warm and Natural and want to see how to fix the problem. I currently use a 4.0 needle.

I did a light spray and I haven't notice anything at all on the fabric.

The can states:

will not stain

dries fast with no grease or oily film

spray a light coat directly on spool or cone of metallic thread to help reduce backspin from static.

I know what your mean about not wanting to hurt the quilt. I first got some slicone spray at true value which wasn't specifically for sewing equipment like the Sullivans, but was pue silicone spray. I sprayed quite a bit of it on a sample piece and came back later and it had no staining or any wet or greasy feel to it at all! It's amazing stuff, lol.

Next time I might try, spraying it on the needle before each pass, to compare the result. Since, the idea is to reduce the friction between the batting and the needle that is catching the batting and creating "ugly pokies":P

I have read people saying don't use silicone becaue it builds up on the machine, but the product states to spray on dry surfaces and wipe the extra, and use as often as you like because it "does not build up." And truthfully, I can tell I am using so little that just doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

So that's the best I can tell you. After my Hobbs is gone, I am going to give the Quilter's Dream products a try to see if I will have no pokies.

I have used the Quilter's Dream and never had a pokie with it. The only reason I bought the Warm and Natural was due to the cost. It was a little cheaper than the Quilter's Dream. But believe me, I'd spend the extra to avoid the pokies.

I looked at the Supplies list for needles and APQS doesn't list the 3.5 needles. I have a Millie. Would any one have advise about the 3.5 needles with Bottom Line thread. Where can I get them and do you have thread breakage with them?

3.5

This is a really good choice for Bottom Line. In fact I'm using this needle most of the time until I get up to a really heavy thread like Poly Quilter.

You can get needles from Columbia River Quilting

http://www.columbiariverquilting.com/

APQS correctly recommends using the 4.0 needle for most of the quilting we do with our machines because of it's strength and flexibilty.
