jebm
Long post, short questions....first, I can\'t imagine ever reading any book more helpful than what is contained, daily, in this chat! I\'m not good at responding to all the gorgeous quilts--and I don\'t have many answers, only questions, but I love to see all the new quilts, and listen to all the great answers, and hope someday to meet you! Now--tension on the quilt sandwich. Having read this chat, read the book that came with my Millie, and taken it all to heart--my quilt sandwich was very "sloppy." It was never tight. My tension issues seemed to multiply. Then I took classes from Myrna, and was shocked to see how "tight" her sandwich was--and how beautifully it quilted, with no effort (seemingly) at all ---lots of experience though! Came home, did the same thing, most of my problems disappeared! Joy returned to quilting! I\'m going to attach a photo--can anyone identify this quilt pattern? I can\'t find it on the internet. And last, a customer wants to make a "West Virginia" quilt...but doesn\'t know if there is a quilt identified with West Virginia. Any suggestions? Thanks to all. You are the most diverse, interesting, smart, funny group of people I\'ve ever not met! Jane
chickenscratch
It looks like Wedding Ring or Wagon wheel, but I\'ve never seen it done with 9 patch blocks. Very interesting, an dvery pretty
quiltmonkey
Jane, wow you have a lovely little treausure there! I am not a specialist in identifying old quilts but you could send an email to some of the quilt historians or those that restore old quilts. I am sure they could give you an idea. Type "quilt historian" or "quilt restoration" in google and see what comes up. Good luck! Plus, the quilt historians could give you some advice on what is appropriate to quilt on it if you want to keep with old tradition. PS: Have fun quilting that thing. I would love to see what you decide to do. Please share finished photos.
clq-jill
Jane, This was one of the first quilts I did on my longarm --really scary, since the edges aren\'t square. The lady was really nice, and said go for it. I don\'t remember the name of the pattern, but I emailed her to ask, and will let you know if she emails back. Here are some pics of what I did. DB
There are actually blocks to represent every state. I have two books on them, somewhere.... I think one book is just the block patterns and the other is coordinating borders. I\'ll try and locate them and post more information.. I think the titles are "State Blocks" or "Blocks of the United States". Dianne
DB
OK, The book I was refering to is titled "The United States Patchwork Pattern Book", by Barbara Bannister and Edna Paris Ford, published by Dover, ISBN # 0486232433. There is also a book on state capitals, both are currently available on Ebay for $3.00-7.00. Hope this helps. Dianne
jebm
Dianne, the US Patchwork Pattern Book sounds like one I need to have! Thanks for sharing that! Jill Miller, your quilt is gorgeous. The customer doesn\'t like heavy quilting, but I may "surprise" her on this one. I will have to think about it! Mine is pretty small--was it difficult to do the circular edge? I\'ve never attempted anything like this! I\'m excited to lay it out and think about it, especially after I see your pictures! Thanks! Shana, it is a pretty quilt, I hadn\'t pressed it when I took the picture and having looked at Jill\'s photos I\'m also thinking about your statement about how it would have been quilted years ago! Lots to think about! Thanks! Jane
bobbi
Jane: I think I saw your quilt in an old American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine.... I\'ll check in the morning and let you know what I come up with... I was as intrigued with it then as I am now!
bobbi
YAY! I found it!!!! Here ya go! It was in the April 1997 issue of AP&Q... I don\'t know if I can put this all on the chat, so send me your email, and I will send you the pattern I scanned. Here\'s the first page.

It\'s for a customer in her 80s who is just a wonderful lady. She will surely appreciate it! The quilt pattern I was looking for belongs to the same lady! Thanks again! DB
Jane, Let me know if you win or not. Don\'t go crazy with the bidding, that book comes up every now and then on Ebay. I think that\'s where I got my copy. If you end up with both the states and the capitals books, depending on what the blocks look like for West Virginia, you could make both blocks and alternate them in a quilt. It might look nice. Good Luck, Dianne
WandaGeneQuilts
Hi-- This was myGrandma Smith\'s favorite quilt pattern and she called it Magic Squares. It is also called Jack\'s Chain (somewhere in an old issue of QNM). Grandma was born in Kansas but lived most of her life in Ohio. Hope this helps. Marion
I just recieved the Better Homes and Gardens Quilt Lovers Favorites from American Patchwork and Quilting vOLUME 8, and the Ali\'s Quilt is on page 82 by Shirley Delph for her first grandchild Ali Schippel and she wanted to "\'incorporater scraps of fabrics saved from clothing she\'d made for Ali\'s mom Robin when Robin was a baby." lindasewsit
Hi Jane!! Love that quilt!! I took Myrna\'s class with you in Chillicothe!! How are you doing? How\'s the quilting going? I have done one costomer quilt and have another one here to do and another one lined up!! I am having a blast!! How did the other classes go? I wish I could have taken more. Myrna is going to be there again in Aug. I am planning on going and trying to take at least 2 classes this time. If you go, want to share a motel room? I figure with gas prices, it would be cheaper for me to stay the night if the classes I want are 2 days in a row. We can email each other later. I have your email ...... somewhere..... linda g. jebm
Dianne, I got the book on ebay--only bidder, total $7.74. I\'m anxious to check it out! Thanks for the hint! Bobbette found the quilt pattern in a 1997 issue of AP & Q, and I think all of you are just great! Now I have to quilt that quilt--eek!
DB
Jane, Congratulations on winning the book. I hope it has a suitable pattern for your West Virginia quilt. And yes I agree with you, the people on here are great. If you ever have a quilt related problem or question someone will usually sign on and help you out.
