tips on quilting Minky

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I have yet another question (you guys are going to be sick of seeing my posts!)

I have a customer who brought me a top with backing thats made of minky. To make matters worse, the backing is BARELY big enough! And I' afraid of stretching it too much. Any suggestions on quilting minky?

Thanks!

Both minky and fleece have stretch to them. Loading them with the selvages on the rollers gives you the least amount of stretch top to bottom. They quilt beautifully as long as you don't stretch them. If you do, they return to their normal state once the pressure is released and can pull your top outa wack. Just don't tighten them and you'll be fine!

I agree with stabilizing strips on the sides when the backing is for a large quilt. I don't do it with fleece, but it would be wise for the minky. It seems stretchier. I especially love to put minky on the backs of baby quilts. Wow, would it be expensive to put on the back of a king size quilt, but how warm and cuddly to sleep with!

I've heard of others that don't like to quilt Minky. Other than the shedding, I don't mind it at all. I've used both So Fine and Rainbow threads on them. Done both with a thin batting and without. Never had a problem. Got to see Fireside at the Des Moines show and can't wait until my friend gets her top done so I can quilt with it. For those who have quilted with Fireside, because of it's weight, did you use batting or not and why?

Lorrie, I just did a Quilt for my hubby and used Fireside, it is awesome, put flannel on one side, fireside on the other and wool batting in between. Quilts beautifully, washes great and keeps him warm. I also made a blanket for our bed, Fireside one side (6 yards as we have a king bed, bamboo cotton batting in between, and muslin on the other side for the cool summer evenings. I just love to get into my bed at night, the fireside is next to my body and wraps me instantly in warmth without being hot, sticky and heavy. A great product!

Just wanted to throw a picture of my minky quilt on...it was very easy to quilt and turned out just fine on this baby quilt... I used a very easy ribbon panto on it so it wouldn't stretch much..

Turned out great Vicki. Minky, Plushy, Fleecy, Fireside are all the same as far as loading it on the frame is concerned, I always tell my customers to leave the selvages on and if that means I have to load the Quilt sideways, then I either quilt it from the front or use a multi directional panto.

And yes, the quilting shows very nicely on the back.
