heartland
I am new to quilting and have a silly question. How do you clean the rails on the frame? I understand that waxing is no longer recommended. Donna
witha'K'quilting
Some use ammonia and others use alcohol and wipe down the rails. I have not yet tried ammonia, but I will. For now, I just use a dry cloth and wipe them.
newellyn
I clean my rails using rubbing alcohol on a rag. I also wipe them down between cleaning with a fabric softener sheet. Use a q-tip with alcohol to clean the wheels. I have heard some using a car cleaner or wax but can't remember the names of the products. I am sure some else will chime in with that. susanramey
I've always used alcohol on a wipe to clean the rails, but recently used ammonia after seeing that tip on this site. I couldn't believe all the grime I was able to remove with ammonia versus alcohol. Cleaned my edgerider wheels very easily also. Highly recommend it. DoryJM
Susan, are you using straight ammonia....like you buy at the grocery? Or do you cut it with water? I LOVE your pup...so cute!!!!
delld
I talked to Patty of Katydids and she suggested to use WD 40 but be sure to clean it off really good, Said she found that the rails don't oxidize as fast! Haven't tried it yet.
Quilting Heidi
Susan glad to see you used the amonia and liked it. I use it exclusively. Yes Dory just use it straight. I get the lemon smelling kind, just don't inhale when you have the bottle under you nose! LOL it will clean the sinus' for you! I use amonia to clean everything. Cheap and it really gets the grime. yankiequilter
I just completed 2 days of classes with Dawn in Des Moines and this question came up. She said the older machines had wheels that required stronger cleaning of the rails due to the oxidation and with the newer machines we don't need to use car wax and only need to use alcohol to wipe down the rails and wheels. Mercedes
When you say newer machines - do we know what year "newer" is? Thanks....Mercedes
yankiequilter
I'm sure Dawn said when the wheels changed but my brain is weary from 2 days of learning and I don't recall. My Millie is newer so didn't apply to me and I let it fly by. Best if you give APQS a quick call and ask. They are always there to help and won't mind the question. And if you do call, would you mind posting the answer for everyone? Thanks!
DoryJM
I bought amonia tonight on my way home from work; I'll be cleaning my rails tomorrow. Wow, straight amonia...yikes!
sewlinzi
I don't think we can buy neat ammonia in the UK! I'm sure it might be an ingredient of explosives... I wondered for ages what "rubbing alcohol" was before it dawned on me that it must be surgical spirit! There has been discussion on the LAUK site about cleaning rails and edgeriders for the IQ system using Windolene??
witha'K'quilting
I believe that Windolene is Windex here in the States...it is a window cleaner, with its key ingredient being...you guessed it...Ammonia!
