Loes
Hi everyone, Just to celebrate that the easy Pre-Design drawing program is available via APQS real soon, I would like to give away a quilting pattern, made with Pre-Design. Now, I could just click away and have fun and create something, but wouldn't it be fun if I made something you would really, really like to have? So let me know what type of quilting design you want to have and I start drawing. Give me a subject, or a description or just a theme and I'll get creative!! I'm not sure if I can post the file itself here once it's finished - If not I will post a download link here. Loes ADDITION TO THIS THREAD (DECEMBER 10, 2007): =================================== Hi everyone, since I first started this thread in August 07 we have made several free quilt designs. Please take a look on page: http://store.pre-design.eu - "Free patterns" and "Theo's Pantos" . I would like to declare this thread "closed" now We will certainly keep posting free patterns on the website every now and then though! Thanks for the nice response. quiltmonkey
Hi Loes, Wow, you are so generous to offer this to us. Thank you! I do not have the compuquilter, but some day maybe I would like to get it. One step at a time! Have a nice day, Loes. Shana
FrammaJoy
Well, if you can print one out without a compuquilter, I sure could use some palm trees right now -- something tropical.
Cheryll
I have quilts with fat beach kitties in bikinis, frogs swimming aloo over, big thirties dog appliques, and more. Ha Ha Waiting for my Millie to arrive soon. Cheryll
Guest LA
Loes, I need a crazy fish bone E2E, can you do something with one of these?
Grace
I would like an E2E of duck feet marching across a quilt . What is the limitation of use for this pattern? Is it limited like so many pantos out there that can only be used for a certain number of quilts, or only for personal quilts? Thanks.
Loes
Great ideas! About the fish bones: very, very cute. But before I digitize it I have to be sure that this image is not copyrighted. The free pattern I will be making is really free: it will be in pre-format, so everyone can open it in Pre-Design (also in the free 21 day trial version), then export to DXF to open in CompuQuilter and IntelliQuilter. And even if you don't have a computerized quilting system: you can print it at actual size directly from Pre-Design (again also in the trial version) for laser guided machines. You may use it unlimited times, on all systems you have, personal quilts, customer quilts, whatever. The only restriction is that you may not share or sell the design itself. Linda, let me know if the fishbones are copyright-free, then I start working on it and do a palm tree and marching ducks after that . Guest LA
Yes Loes, it is copy right free from Dover Publications, can't wait to see the crazy fish bones!
ramona-quilter
Welll, I had to go check the demo. I reminds me of coloring in a book when I was a kid. I love it. I bet this would be perfect for ghosting a design, like repeating a flower pieced in one block into a blank block. And the price is pretty cool. I think that I might have to download the freebie and try it. There are times when I would like to be able to draw a pattern from a scan. I don't expect that I will ever have a computer on my machine but this just looks like a cool tool for designing some custom stuff.
Loes
Thanks for the wonderful ideas. I am working on them already. Will post the link to the free pattern(s) after the weekend. I will make the patterns suitable for use with, but also without a computerized quilting system!! Loes http://quilters.pre-design.eu
CherylUribe
I've been working with the trial version. I will for sure buy the program, it is great! Though I'm not good enough to make this:
Loes
That's a spectacular image, but... that drawing should not be made in a vector drawing program, but in a pixel based drawing program, where you have strokes and brushes. Pre-Design is a vector drawing program which creates line-art, lines all of even width (the ones you need for quilting). Closed shapes can bee colored though, but to find the right objects to fill in this image is pretty tough. When you would want to turn this image into a line drawing, then this particular image is a hard nut to crack because you can't really see the head of the bull very clearly, so you wouldn't know how to draw the head. But on the other hand, when you would know how to draw the bull's head, then it's doable of course! Would you want to use this image as a quilting pattern?? The Crafty Unicorn
I'm trying the free preview and had a customer who wanted a leaf panto on a jungle quilt. I found the leaf on the fabric, traced it and flipped, pasted and printed. My panto looks a bit scruffy, but the quilt came out great. This is a wonderful tool I will have to buy soon. The Crafty Unicorn
I was so excited, I forgot my question. Is there an easy way to draw a spiral in pre-design? I've seen it done with a circular graph paper but can't get my head around how to do it on a square grid. Thanks, Leslie
Loes
Hi Leslie, Nice quiltpattern!! A spiral cannot be done "automatically" in Pre-Design: you have to draw it manually. To make that easier: scan a piece of that circular graph paper into your computer, save as jpg and open the image via menu Background > Load from picture file to get it into Pre-Design. You may have to switch the Pre-Design grid off (by clicking on its icon in the toolbar) to have a better view on the scanned graph paper. Then use the Curve tool to draw your spiral the same way as you would do it on the gaph paper. With the Curve tool you don't need many points to get nice smooth curves. Edit by selecting and moving points. Be very precise, because when you have done the work properly, you're done and you can re-use it over and over again - change size etc. (change the size by selecting all, right-click and choose size - set the desired size and click OK). Then save as *.pre-design and keep it for future use. Finally export to DXF format and/or print the pattern via the File menu. If you want a spiral in another size, just re-open the pre-file, change the size and export to DXF again. Hope this helps, Loes http://quilters.pre-design.eu
gable428
Loes, can you do something with dachsunds?
gable428
Loes, I checked out this product and it's great that you offer it for those with computerized systems and those without (like me!). I love pantos and to be able to have a program to create my own is so cool. I downloaded the trial, but of course, being computer illiterate, I'll have to have one of my kids help me figure it out!!!
Loes
Hi Gable, Even if you're really computer illiterate, you will be surprised how easy Pre-Design is when you just start playing with it! First take the time to read the User Guide (open via Pre-Design's menu Help > Help (PDF). The User Guide can also be read on page: http://www.pre-design.eu/userguide.htm Also take a look at the slideshows on page: http://quilters.pre-design.eu/screenshots.htm'>http://quilters.pre-design.eu/screenshots.htm Those slide shows only take a couple of minutes. Then dive into it yourself: Start Pre-Design, take the Curve tool and just click around, from point to point, double click to finish a line. Draw the lines in a sequence where you can follow all the lines in one continuous run. Edit the lines by taking the Select tool (Arrow in the toolbar), then clicking on a point and moving it to a better position. Choose menu Edit > Select All. Right-click on the selection and choose Size: make it the size you want or need for a specific quilt (you can open the drawing later and choose another size for another quilt). Save and print. Enjoy!! Loes http://quilters.pre-design.eu
Loes
Hi everyone, With pleasure I would like to announce my fist freebie: I have chosen the request for a dachshund and it was really fun to draw in Pre-Design! Attached is a little preview of the pattern. It's a continuous pattern, repeatable in CompuQuilter and of course it can be printed from Pre-Design as well if you don't have CQ. I will put it up for download on my website tomorrow. In the zip-file you will find various file formats, so that you can try it out on different quilting systems. Hope you like it Loes

FrammaJoy
Well, I saw the posts again today, so downloaded the Free trial software. I think it is slow to respond to instruction. Maybe because I am used to using Artista V5 software, and it is so responsive. I tried duplicating, but it would move parts of my drawing -- not all of it. I drew a snail. It would move the outline of the snail, but not its face. In Artista you can GROUP the design so it all moves together. I think it is a great idea and would love for it to work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Hugs,
Loes
Hi Joy, When the program is slow, you are perhaps using a background imae that is too large in file size, or you are drawing too many points too close together. Be sure that you use a background image in jpg format, scanned at a low resolution. See also page 20 of the User Guide (via menu Help > Help (PDF), also in the trial version). When drawing, take the Curve tool and see that you only need to draw a few points to get nice smooth curves. Selecting and moving or duplicating: choose menu Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A) and then copy and paste or move. When a part is selected, it turns magenta. Before you do anything with the selection be sure that all parts are magenta. Probably your snake wasn't completely selected. Just keep playing with the program and you'll love it!! For artista you can also color the drawing in Pre-Design and then choose menu File > Export Color bitmap. BMP files exported from Pre-Design have solid colors, which will make the image work like a charm with the magic wand in Artista! And then the magic wand turns out to be a really cool tool! Check out the screenshots page on our website: There are a lot of helpful slideshows for quilters: http://quilters.pre-design.eu/screenshots.htm and for embroiderers: http://www.pre-design.eu/screenshots.htm Enjoy!! FrammaJoy
Oh, that is good to know -- about sending it to Artista. The magic wand doesn't do a very good job so far. Thanks,
Loes
The Magic Wand in Artista is looking for areas with the same colored pixels. Most images consist of thousands of pixels - all mixed colors, and then the Magic Wand just finds a few spots and not the entire region. With Pre-Design's Export Color Bitmap you get solid colors: in each region the pixels have just one color and then there's no guessing for the Magic Wand It will find the right shape for you. Pre-Design turns the Magic Wand in Artista from a beginner thingy into a very useful tool - a nice time saver! See also remark about the magic wand on my Artista tutorial page: http://www.artistitch.com/pages/ArtistaCollege.html Hope this helps, Loes
FrammaJoy
Loes! I am THRILLED and SHOCKED and EXCITED, and did I say THRILLED to know you are familiar with ARtista software. Everything I have learned, I have learned from the internet, because the Bernina instructors I've been to mainly know the term "I Don't Know". I have just purchased the V5 update. Do you have any CD written specifically to V5 insofar as changes from V4? I am going to purchase the Pre-Design software today. Need to know though: I have 3 computers. Will it be a problem to install it on all 3? I have 2 homes -- each with a computer -- and a laptop that travels with me. So glad to have "found" you. (Bet you didn't know you were lost, did you?)
