How much do you use SID?

Recommended Posts

I agree with what Judy L. has said. I feel that most quilts just

NEED some SID! I see so many quilts with just the wavey line

going down through a 1" sashing or border - and that looks

SO sloppy, fast and easy to me. (and bad too) I will not do it.

I would much rather SID both sides of it, and thats what I do!

I save this step for the last thing, it is only 4 more starts and

stops. I start at the upper left corner - go across the top - go

down the right side. Wind the quilt back to the top, starting

again in the upper left corner - go down the left side - across

the bottom edge - Do these steps again for the other side of

the border - DONE!!

Just a little more info... I personally LOVE SID!! None of the other LA\'s in

my area do it, and I have NO problems with it at all!!! I have a good hand

on my machine and can do the right to left or the up and down freehand. As

for doing diagonals, I use a ruler. My favorite one is only about 6 1/2" long and is 3" wide. Easy to keep a good hold on it. I made it myself!!! A 1/4"

thick piece of acrylic cut on a saw - slowly - and sand the edges smooth.

This was taught to me by Dawn C. in class at APQS. Why spend big money

on a ruler until you know if you like using it? I marked lines ever 1/4" on the

bottom with diff. colored markers and covered that with clear contact paper.

I bought my machine used, the lady gave me the extended

table, but not the rulers. Why I do not know, since she hated to do SID.

The one I have on my machine now is all SID and crosshatch. I will try and

post a photo tomorrow. I have posted photos before of my

rulers, even have a set for standard DWR quilts!

I checked out the site for the Line Tamer. Doesn\'t the APQS have a 1/2" hopping foot. They have it listed as 9/16???

Also, I guess I thought that SID was absolutely necessary to stabilize the quilt when doing custom or anything that\'s not edge to edge.

I tried doing custom once w/o SID and the stitching sort of ate the quilt -- pulled it from all around. It was so out of square that I had to take out a LOT of stitches. It takes less time to SID than to undo stitches.

I use Sherry Rogers-Harrison\'s Dainty SID ruler, because I can guide it along as I go and not have to put on the extended base.

Thanks for the information on the line tamer. I just ordered one. I too thought that the APQS hopping foot was 1/2 inch but went with what they said to order on the site. I am looking forward to trying the ruler out as SID hasn\'t been something I have enjoyed doing or have done well. I hope others post as to their comments on this ruler.

After that build-up, I went ahead & ordered the "line tamer"; at $21.50, including shipping, who could afford NOT to, if it does all that? Anyway, I will keep you all posted.Last time I ordered something, it was from Quilter\'s Rule, & took over a month to get here, so I will keep you posted on that aspect also.

Which size "line tamer" fits Millie, 9/16 or 1/2 there was some chat about them listing the wrong size? I want to order one soon. I finished my Civil War diary quilt (121 blocks) which is screaming for SID which I haven\'t tried yet on "gator".
