help needed on grandmothers flower garden

Recommended Posts

Now, I've started my business and have done a few customer quilts already. But they were all E2E's. Yesterday a lady brings in a beautifull handsewn grandmothers flower garden top. She definitely does not want to quilt it herself (by hand) and I'm not so fond of an E2E for this on (or I did miss a lovely panto). The customer is not willing to pay for heavy custom quilting. So here I am, novice quilters who seeks help. Does any of you has a suggestion what to do? Thanks for looking at the pictures:

Wendy have you looked on Webshots or done a search here? This is a pretty classic quilt and I'm sure that there are ideas here on the board and on Webshots! My mind is mush today so I'm not much help. My DH has Parkinson's(he's only 53) and had to be taken off the medication that let him move well due to weird side effects. I am brain drained from trying to help him and keep him 'up' and not depressed!

Good luck!

Wendy there is a beautiful panto called Daisies and Loops and it is big and open and will give nice texture to the Quilt without taking over the piecing pattern. You could always do that in the body of the Quilt and SID the border, or feather the border, or use a leafy meander. Just some ideas. I am an uncomplicated gal and tend to go for texture in a case like this.

I would do free motion cc's through all the colored and if you want to practice feathers that white area is a perfect place to do that. I know she wants light custom but you can always try out new things. In my book if I'm learning its ok. I always mark on the invoice what it should have cost and then give a discount to get to light custom. that way they know they won't get that price a 2nd time.

You could cc the whole thing! The flower part, and the back would look like pumpkin seed design through out the whole center, then you can do a quick border treatment. It would be kind of "mindless" quilting for you, and you could pop it out kinda fast that way!!!!! And, it would be continuous!!!

Thank you. I can't wait for Jane to come to FL from WI to pick it up. She is going to be so happy that she can now use it.

ANother project arrived at my door this weekend. It is a Lap Quilted wohle cloth look. The maker was 98 when she passed. She had hand quilted 12 beautiful squares and stitched them into three rows. Thr back seams are still open. She had all the fabric for the borders and backing. I'm really excited to get to finish it for her. The quilter passed away 2 years ago and it was her only quilt but had made clothing all her life. BTW the hand quilting it wonderful. When I finish it I'll post a picture!

Hi Wendy,

nice to hear, that your business runs! :)

I'm not a help for your question because I havn't quiltet a GFG yet, but I really like the way, Dell quilted the GFG. The first link from Shana is also very beatifully quilted but I think, that's a very time consuming one ...

Regards from Osnabrück

Oh Goodness! I'm currently hand piecing a GFG (for fun?) and sent a floret to Australia for the Guinness Book challenge.

These are fabulous examples of how to quilt them! I have saved some of these for when I'm done... (next year sometime?) Anyway, I love the ones that Linda Farnham did...

AND the salmon colored on is bound so beautifully! WOW! to all of them..

Bobbi, thank you so much. Here is a close up so you can see what I did. Hope thia will you some ideas. If I were to do it over I would have applicqued the blocks to a border by hand instead of adding piping and a facing! BTW I sid around each flower with the color of thread I used on the flower. I think I used 7 colors. I know, I'm a little crazy!
