Busy Quilting
Girlfriend Time – Who knew it was so important! A thought to share ...a friend just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection--the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious. Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more seratonin--a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities. They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes. But their feelings?--rarely. Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym. There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged--not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! So every time you hang out to shmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very very lucky. Sooooo let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health. I think this forum Qualifies TOO. Lyn

Sylvia
Too Right! There is something wonderful about chatting with other women about our many cares and concerns. Is that why we love our guilds? I have spent many happy hours walking with friends (including our daughter ) and the time flies by because we are fuelled by conversation. Here's to friendship Sylvia

kennan100
I just have to agree with this completely! I just had a wonderful day with close family, which is always joyful. But our family happens to have a LOT of girls, and we are all very close. Even the "steps" and in-laws fit right in and we always enjoy each others company so much. And the guys in the family drift in and out of the conversations, in when they can join, and out when it gets to deep....or we start talking our own language and then they disappear until we start speaking English again! And I get the same feelings here everyday! Aren't we blessed?

Kerstin
I think that man is absolutely right! Yesterday I've spent a day with three quilting friends. We drove to the Netherlands (it's just an hour from my home) and we were looking around (and buying ) about two hours in a lovely PW-Shop. The shop-owner offered us a cup of coffee and of course we talked about fabrics and quilts but also about everything that came in our minds. Then we had a little lunch, drove to a wonderful gardening center, had coffee and talked, talked, talked. We had a lot of fun and although serious talking. It was a wonderful day, really good for body and soul

Tinie
Yesterday, we had our last Friday of the month quiltbee. It was great being with my friends, only one was missing because her son had his graduation from university. Here you can see us working on our quilts http://marjolijnquilts.web-log.nl/blog/2010/07/quiltdagje.html. I was handquilting on a little quilt for a niece. We had a great lunch together and did talk a lot and had a lot of fun. It was a great day, Kerstin at which shop have you been?? Lohuis-Tijhuis in Oldenzaal??
