GrandmaLKB
I just finished this quilt top in a version of the Grandmother's Flower Garden. Ardelle posted a similar one made by a customer a few months ago and I put my own twist on it by setting the blocks on point and using just one row of the pieced sashing between. The blocks are 16" with the "flower" being approx. 12"......the sashings are 1 1/2" wide, the inner yellow border is 3" wide and the outer blue border is 51/2" wide. My very first thought as to how to quilt it was to crosshatch the white background, use my QZ feather wreath on the flowers, maybe a leaf design in the pieced sashings...........??? Other suggestions for that area and the borders? All ideas will be appreciated. This might be a State Fair entry this year, so I want to do it up right. It is my quilt. The whole top measures 118" square. Thanks!!!! [/img] [/img] This one shows the 10" QZ feather wreath drawn on plastic film to see how it looks and fits. The 12" wreath lopped over the edges too much.
Dustee
Linda, Sorry I can't give advice on quilting. I am not experienced enough. But your quilt is beautiful. I love the 1930's fabrics. Dustee
quiltmonkey
I like your idea of the feathered wreath. Go for it girl!
Quilting Heidi
Linda I think you have made very good design choices. I'd put a pretty feather borer in the outside border. I like the QZ feather wreath in the center.
Deb2bie
Than is really an innovative idea for GFG!!! I think it will turn out really great!!! I too would put feather in the big border like Heidi said. Cross hatching will set the wreaths off well!!!
LadyLake
First, I want to say that I like how you put the white squares at the sashing intersections -- I think it, along with the yellow flower centers, make the piecing colors shine. I'm wondering if you might look at doing a leafy 3" border panto in the yellow inner border. I think I'd SID the sashing edges, and quilt a simple waving design inside it. GrandmaLKB
Thanks for the suggestions ! I'll leave it hang up for a while and think about it. I like all your ideas. Any others will be appreciated as well. I got the backing and binding all ready to go today, so it will be ready when the notion strikes me. ffq-lar
The quilt is beautiful! I applaud your choice of the feathered wreath in the flowers. You won't believe this, but I suggest you re-think the plan to crosshatch behind the flowers. Yes, the woman who sells crosshatching rulers says don't crosshatch it! My reasoning is, with the graphics of the design with the sashings in an "X", crosshatching will be repeating the "X" over and over and over. And any slight deviation from exactly 45 either in the stitching or the piecing will really show. I think that will be too many diagonals. Instead, do a soft fill behind the flowers. It doesn't need to be dense, just with matching white thread. A medium stipple, 3's-and-E's, a peacock fill, cloud fill, whatever you are happy stitching. I think a ribbon meander would be really pretty--and easy to stitch. This is just a thought and in no way meant to make you stray from your first idea if you are happy with it..... GrandmaLKB
Thanks Linda...........I think you might be right about too many Xs going on there. Although I am sure my stitching and alighment are 'PERFECT" :P:P:P:P I understand how any misbobble will really be magnified. I'll draw out some ideas on plastic preview film and see what I can come up with. Maybe something more circular to draw the eye away from straight lines that might no be so straight.
